My calculus 2 teacher had a really weird explanation for how "hydrostatic force" works.

I think he tried to explain it as if it was "pressure" but that doesn't really make sense.

Is my understanding that the "hydrostatic force" is basically just "the weight of the water above a surface"?

I've heard a lot of people say that Freshman year is always the hardest, and that your classes get easier as you go along.

This seems to be the case for most of my friends, but is it true for Physics majors?

I'm looking at my curriculum, and I see a lot of 400 level math and physics classes, and it looks like it's only going to get tougher from here.

Any physics majors willing to share their experiences?

If
Cot(x) = 1/tanx = arctanx

Then why isn't the derivative of arctanx the same as cotx?

/sci/, is there an operator that fits into the slot (?) below?

y=log(a+b)
y=log(a) ? log(b)

Bonus points if it's well-documented and has real-life applications, although I doubt that.

so anyone want to help with my physics homework?

1) When several parallel forces are in equilibrium, how does the total upward force compare with the total downward force?

2) When several parallel forces are in equilibrium, how does the sum of the clockwise torques compare with the sum of the counterclockwise torques?

3) At what point does the weight of the meter stick appear to act in producing equilibrium?

High school senior, getting ready to declare his major.

What kind of jobs do you guys have?
Until recently, I wanted to be an engineer, but lately I've been wanting to get into pure physics.

What kind of jobs can someone get with a physics degree, besides teaching, and research? and how do they pay?

For those of you who are physics majors, what do you do for a living, and what is it like?

In kindergarden, my class was in a trailer.

My teacher was a total bitch, and we weren't allowed to go to the bathroom. Not even during lunch or recess.

One day, I had to go really badly, so I just unloaded behind her desk.

And let me tell you something IT FELT GOOD.
It is the greatest feeling I have ever had in my life.
I just wish I had balls like that when I got older.

If I ever have kids, I'm going to make sure that every one of them shits on a teachers desk at least once in their lives.

Hey /sci/ how does one train their mind in math? I've always wanted to go into a field of science for a living but have always hit a snag when it comes to math.

I understand that I need to master math to take me where I want to go, so how do I do it? Where do I start?

When I was a kid, I always hated my teachers, especially my science and math teachers. I always had this vague feeling that they were all just a bunch of stuck up bitches, who really didn't care, or know shit about science.
Despite this, I always told myself that I wanted to be "a scientist" Working for NASA, discovering Aliens, inventing time travel where my childhood dreams.
I used to sleep with a copy of "1000 facts about the universe".
So long story short, I loved science, but hated school.
Towards the end of high school, my attitude towards teachers started to change. I gained a lot of respect for them, and I even became friends with them. I changed my future plans to become a math teacher.

Now I'm in college, and I can see a lot of the would-be-teachers, and I can see that everything I thought about teachers when I was a kid was true.
They're all brain dead white chicks, they struggle to solve even the simplest of equations, fail to grasp simple concepts, and have incredibly bitchy attitudes. They all became teachers because "they love kids" and "they want to make a difference". It's all bullshit. They just want a job where they can be bossy bitches to people who still don't have the balls to talk back to them.
Of course, I'm the biggest dumb-ass amongst them.
I told myself that I wanted to be a teacher, but the reality is that I realized that I'm not nearly smart enough to actually DO any kind of rsearch or applied of science.

tl;dr: High school and middle school teachers are a waste of tax dollars and oxygen.
