I don't think it's as clear-cut as you were trying to make it sound. The TBI patients with depression were largely people with a history of mood disorders who struggled with other problems resulting from their brain injury. That's also saying nothing of the psychological trauma of whatever accident caused the brain injury or the ways in which it may have interrupted their lives while they had to spend time recovering. Even just having to deal with the medical bills could trigger depression, especially in groups of people who tend to have a history with reacting to things with depressive symptoms.
