What books and videos would /sci/ recommend for a person who wants to get started learning about science in general, but finds it difficult to know where to start based on the sheer volume of material out there?

Some specific areas of interest to me are particle physics and astronomy, but any subject that you know of a good book that caters to beginners that would prime someone for more advanced topics later on would be of great help.

1. Don't let good threads die when there is troll shit in the first page! Bump the good threads in the lasts pages!

2. Report trolls! Trolling is not allowed outside /b/. Report them!

How do I calculate the theoretical heat yield of like Sodium Acetate in those heat packs? Wiki lists an answer but I seriously do not get how they got it. In return, a cool wallpaper.
