Its simple. The undergraduate programs in the US charge insane tuition. With that money they can hire the greatest minds of the fields and buy expensive equipment. Of course none of that actually benefits the undergraduates because anyone with half a brain can teach shit like calculus(and great researcher != great teacher) and you dont need fancy equipment in your physics 1 lab. Of course the researchers and graduate programs are benefiting big time from that whole scam which is why they rank so well. This of course leads to great research being done and from the resulting pretige you can again scam people into your undergraduate programs. So its kind of a self propelling scam that is fueled even more by the state handing out student loans to everyone.
