Nowhere along this downward hill were you prescribed methylphenidate? That would have been a godsend for someone like you.

Exactly! Smart man here. Psychological addiction and habituation can have profound effects on the brain.

Seriously you guys; there would be no such thing as MA if it weren't a problem. It's funny how some stoner-types cite the large number of users as somehow evidence of its "harmlessness." Last time I checked, lots of people using a drug is not a positive mark on that drug!

To the person who asked, the addictive substance in cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol. It crosses the blood brain barrier quite well due to its lipophillic nature. It has a rather great affinity for the CB1 receptor, causing among other things euphoria (but none of us need explanations there) and analgesia. The latter is of interest for medical applications, although there are pre-existing medications which perform the same effect with less contraindications.

One thing about which I am concerned is its ability to disrupt GABA function. This very reasonably be the cause for the incidences of marijuana-induced anxiety disorders. Marijuana addicts often end up abusing BZDs or alcohol when they develop an anxiety disorder.

If you're a marijuana addict, get help. There are many resources at your disposal to help your recovery. Don't try to justify it intellectually, though. Get healthy and be happy.

Moralistic fallacy? I'm not a philosophy-fag so I'm not up on my logical fallacies, but to dismiss appeals to morality is terribly nihilist. There are many implications for scientific racism, and they all point to doom and gloom. Scientific racism is exactly contrary to the goals of legitimate science, which is to enhance the human condition.

>>Post studies where imbibing THC has harmed someone, not anecdotes, and not anything to do with smoking it.

Do your own search on Elsevier. Use keywords like "cannabinoid" "toxicity" "neurotoxicity" "tetrahydrocannabinol" "schizophrenia risk." Lazy stoner.

>>compare marijuana with many prescription drugs and you'll be surprised just how much healthier it is.

Agreed with most of what you said. My main beef is that people--mostly ppl my age--are starting to think weed is somehow "healthy" or good for you. The 1950s-esque, Reefer Madness stuff is equally irrational, but it doesn't make sense to swing to the opposite side and say it's harmless. That proposition in California that attempted to make weed totally legal is a manifestation of the culture's changing attitudes, and I believe it is false progress. Marijuana won't kill you the way heroin or cocaine will, but it will have toxic effects on your neurobiology and possibly your mental health.

Certain drugs like alcohol and marijuana are relatively harmless with great moderation (< once a month). People shouldn't kid themselves, though. They are putting themselves at risk if they overindulge in marijuana.

I wouldn't call the CIA "oppressors." They're doing a quite good job protecting America, and I'm in full support of most things to protect the safety of good people from bad people.

Even wiretaps and that shit. If you're innocent, you have nothing to hide. In fact, if you're innocent, you'd be glad someone was wiretapping and surveilling you--first, they'd be more likely to see that you're just a nobody, second, you'll presumably have some evidence in your favor assuming that they constantly surveilled you and you were innocent.

Anyway, this isn't a poly-sci-fag board, so I'll save my breath.

But marijuana dependence is real. Dr. Drew says a surprising amount of the addicts he treats are primarily marijuana addicts. I've read the numbers, I've read some of the literature regarding the toxic effects some cannabimimetic drugs can have on the brain...I think our culture is slowly developing an acceptance toward something which really is unhealthy. I think we will see many more schizophrenics in the coming decades when the effects take hold on the generation born in the 90s.

That said, a little toke now and then is not bad. Like a celebratory cigar, why not whip out the bong in celebration of some achievement?

But we acted like we had testicles and took the challenges (which for most of us /sci/ were more social than academic). Act like you have some testicles and man up.

By the way, most universities require a high school diploma even if you went to a junior college. Very few 4-year universities do not require a high school diploma from a high school. Doesn't matter what high school most of the time--even foreign ones are very much acceptable. I've heard stories where the admissions offices make exceptions if you come from a very troubled past (like a ghetto, which I presume you're not from), but brought yourself up by the bootstraps, got a G.E.D., got A's in junior college, and made a serious effort to rise above your past.

Go back to that high school Tuesday morning and beg to be put back in. YOU WILL REGRET DROPPING OUT. DROPPING OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL IS ONLY UNDERSTANDABLE IF YOU ARE A GANGBANGER AND HAVE TWO KIDS ON THE WAY FROM FIVE DIFFERENT WOMEN (intentional sic). GO BACK TO FUCKING SCHOOL YOU FUCKING IDIOT!!!

ARE YOUR PARENTS HIGH? WHY WOULD THEY LET YOU DO THIS?

Abiogenesis is a very interesting subject. When I was 14, I thought I would make the biggest breakthroughs ever by proving once and for all in a primordial soup type of experiment that biological molecules can be synthesized under primitive Earth-like conditions from inorganic molecules. I thought I'd surely do this experiment and become the most respected scientist in the world. I kept this fantasy going until I discovered six months later that Miller and Urey did the same thing about 30 years ago--only better. God damnit.

Focus on your own work. Einstein didn't make the greatest discoveries in physics by giving a flying shit about other people's bullshit.

As a science nerd atheist, it's my opinion that the atheist proselytizers like Dawkins et al are almost (but not quite) as bad as the Mormon fucknuts on bikes, missionaries who take advantage of poor third world people and give them bibles and then food, Hare Krishnas on my univ campus, the God Hates Fags people, and a whole host of people who are out on a mission to save the world with their retarded religion or ideology. Just stop it, please. The only sort of ideas of which I approve people proselytizing about are anthropogenic climate change, evolution, space exploration financing, sciences financing, and a law mandating women with above average breasts to routinely opt not to wear any clothes (for my viewing pleasure). Thank you very much.

Engineering in general is one of those fields where >50% are in it bc of pressure from parents or others because they want to make decent cash. Which is very much true. Engineering BS's can very easily make more money than some MS's and (all) MA's. The EE nerds I know seem to derive the most satisfaction from their studies compared to the other engineering kids (chem-e, mech-e, so on).

Parents wanted me to do engineering, but since chemistry was really my passion, that's what I'm pursuing. I don't think you can get good grades in a subject that you don't really enjoy to some degree. People who like their discipline do better bc they foresee applications for what they're studying.

Well, let's be honest. If torture for Gitmo-fags is legal, you have a 1.1 x 10^-485 chance of being tortured. And I think everyone can agree that they'd have no problem with a soldier torturing a genuine terrorist, especially if it is to get intel (but even if it doesn't work in getting intel, wouldn't you not give a shit anyway if he gets tortured?). The problem is if it is an innocent guy. Which is really a tragedy, but as is the case for all the people who served thirty years in prison only to find out after the fact that new evidence (usually DNA) proved them innocent. We can't make flawless decisions, but we make right decisions the great bulk of the time.
