I was simply attributing it to weight gain in an individual, and therefore the amount of calories that can be metabolized is an important factor.

Yes protein is converted to glucose through gluceogenesis but where is the study to show that an excess can cause this to take place?

>> No.4447352 [View]

>>4447344
Yes but having the equivalent of the alcohol in carbs would make you store weight much faster. If you had say 400 calories of alcohol you may only have access to 200 of those calories as energy, whereas nearly all 400 calories of carbs could be utilized.

Alcohol does provide the body with energy, though studies have shown that the full kilo-caloric potential is not being utilized.

I agree, I just thought that people should be more informed about the nature of digestion. If someone is counting calories as a means to maintain their weight, they may not be attaining the fuel necessary for the body and may in fact be at a deficit.

Yes but amino acids are only used as a fuel source if your intake of carbs and fats is low. Maybe I should rephrase my question. Why do nutritional labels encompass the complete caloric content of protein when, for the most part, it is not actually used as energy?

>> No.4447225 [View]

I am talking about an excessive intake of kilocalories. Why is protein counted if most of it is excreted or used as building blocks for the body, instead of as energy for the body?

Hey sci, why is it that we count the calories from protein in our daily intake? What I mean is that the amino acids from protein are themselves not used as energy and cannot be stored easily as fat. Most excess protein is simply excreted in urine and not used at all. Inb4 gluceogenesis, only happens if you eat very low carbs or starve yourself.

Nix my way. This way even accounts for friction and everything! OP use this formula, I completely forgot about it!

>> No.4345309 [View]

Record the height from some arbitrary point of reference, then plug into equation U = mgh where m is mass, g is 9.81 m s^-2 and h is the height you recorded. Now set that value to (1/2)mv^2 where m is your mass and v is your final velocity.
However since m is on both sides of mgh = (1/2)mv^2 you can cancel it and are left with v = square root(2gh) only problem with using this formula is that I assume your friction is 0 (which it visibly isn't) so you have to account for friction, I'm not doing that step for you. Hint: find the coefficient of kinetic friction and then just analyze the system with forces and you're good.

Hey /sci/ I was wanting your opinion on Greek honors societies. I'm not a science or math major, but I'd assume this board gets the most college students. I was invited to Phi Kappa Phi. I normally don't join stuff like this. What's your opinion?

Not at all, if this is true, what's to say there aren't particles that travel 10,000 times the speed of light.

Guys! Guys! Calm down! The professor was senile, he was clearly just getting over-excited, he was talking about god and everything, clear proof he's off his rocker.

But seriously this is all speculation until the experiment is proven correct, and even then this computer sim idea the guy was coming out with was more speculation, there's probably another explanation for quantum entanglement given this new discovery.

So in short it opens a whole world of ideas and our current understanding of quantum entanglement may be altered by the new discovery of neutrinos travelling FTL, and maybe it would make sense and prove this senile old bugger going on about computers and simulations to be simply getting a little over-excited.

Sound waves are a kind of wave called a mechanical wave, light waves are electromagnetic, meaning they need no medium, they could (and do) travel right through space!
