With out math the other sciences would not be possible...
and math an physics overlap a bit,
newton invented calc to solve physics problems....

As an aside, I hate all threads which has its topic as "x is not a science."

How "pure" must a field of study be in order to be considered a science? The only truly pure field of study is mathematics. Where do you draw the distinction and how do you measure the "purity" of a field of study?

Whenever these threads come up, I always imagine this strip.

Any physics majors on /sci/? I really like physics but I don't know what jobs I can get with a degree in it.

Anyone with a physics major care to share their stories?

How does /sci/ feel about this?

What field of work are you? What's your ranking in purity?

1 - 6

1 being Mathematician.

I think the best way to Piss off a scientist is an Religious extremist. I had a 2 hour convo with some religious nut about how god is amazing...She never stayed on topic, had lots of filler, and never answerd my questions... D:<

It was only a matter of time before this was posted. I think psychology and anthropology straddle the line that separates sciences from non-sciences. Sociology has some numerical/statistical elements, but it's more qualitative and subjective than true sciences. Clinical psychology is not a science, but there are experimental portions of psychology that are scientific.

Funny, I just started a thread similar to this but I didn't see this one first.

IMO, Physics takes for granted the tools created by applied Mathematicians, and then uses these tools to construct hypotheses and to test them. Applied Mathematicians take the work of pure mathematicians and come up with uses for them (if any) according to their field of expertise. Pure mathematicians try to answer open questions, or come up with those questions, without necessarily having any ultimate goal in their work. There may not even be uses for their work for hundreds of years

Whatever diagram you come up with, Mathematics is always at the top of the tree.

Philosophy is just a combination of chaos with applied game theory.
