Trolling people is overrated. For every troll post you make 20 regular posts will be made because you can't post often enoug.

Not sure, but SD shows prices of $40 per article. Probably something around the $300 mark, unfortunately

You can talk philosophy, and you can talk about things other than work. I hope you have more interests than your speciality.

Probably, yes. We can see the effects of it, so I don't see why not.

Why?

I support the idea that every time you post this image you should donate to charity. You can claim that Christianity is no more ethical than you are, but if you claim that you are more ethical than it while doing this kind of slacktivism you're both an easy target and a bit of an asshole.

AFAIK (and I am not an expert) getting a decent job in medicine is HARD. You need to get a Ph.D, and you need to be good at the job too. Medicine is an area where there is a shortage of work, mainly because of an influx of doctors from the far east.

>The temperature of a Bic lighter flame is 1977C or 3590.6F.

That's insane.

I think nitinol needs about 900k depending on composure, so a lighter might just do it. not sure whether that flame temperature is for the whole thing or just the tip, though.

>> No.3419852 [View]

>>3419850
Agreed. To "set" the shape it returns to, you need to get it semi-molten though. IIRC the right temperature for doing that is a fair few hundred degrees.

Shameful second bump
I'll take timestamped images of what you ask me to do, if that helps. also, how could you not be in favour of me failing to reach a good temperature and setting fire to my garden?

Bumping for SCIENCE
from the wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel_titanium
>Nickel titanium, also known as nitinol, is a metal alloy of nickel and titanium, where the two elements are present in roughly equal atomic percentages.

>Nitinol alloys exhibit two closely related and unique properties: shape memory and superelasticity (also called pseudoelasticity). Shape memory refers to the ability of nitinol to undergo deformation at one temperature, then recover its original, undeformed shape upon heating above its "transformation temperature". Superelasticity occurs at a narrow temperature range just above its transformation temperature; in this case, no heating is necessary to cause the undeformed shape to recover, and the material exhibits enormous elasticity, some 10-30 times that of ordinary metal.

I was thinking of making some 3D models, setting them in plaster, then firing them with some kind of makeshift furnace.

HELLO

I have a fairly decent quantity of nitinol wire I bought a while back when someone posted here to tell us it was 90% off on amazon for some reason. Being the horrible person I am I bought $30 worth, which is arriving soon (difficulty getting it to the UK). Does anyone have any idea what I can do with about 20 72" strands of it?

Not sure what the composure is.

I was talking about the tubservatory, should have been clearer. This is a fabulous idea, though, and if you can get the cost down to $100 you'll probably get takers in tourism as well as on image boards :D

I can't do the math, but have some numbers
The air rushing out would be at 14.5psi, air would also be pulled through by gravity at 9.81<span class="math"> ms^{-1}
(moon gravity would be 2.78<span class="math"> ms^{-1}
. The portals have a surface area of pretty much <span class="math"> \pi/2
.

That's a lot lower than I (probably wrongly) thought. What kind of dimensions would the air pocket have? I was assuming you'd need to call every cubic metre of air 990KG of pull

This'd also reduce the pressure difference at the top of the container which would prevent bursting, and replace the air contained faster which would be useful if you farted.

>> No.3419629 [View]

I has criticism
-The tub is going to be pulling upwards with some serious force. There might well be different ways of getting an air pocket, or at least reducing its size without reducing utility. If you had a shorter air pocket than shown (35cm?) and then a movable platform underneath, you would be able to make it equally useful to really tall people (who would otherwise have trouble reaching outside of it) without making it dangerous.

I love the idea of just having a compressor and a lil' hole for the air to come out of, by the way. Certainly can't think of a better way in which you could get air down there
