Because a) capital outlay for factories is expensive.
And
B) you cannot supply instant freedom of design. You simply can't compete with a legacy business structure.
Here is a 3d printed dress.

I grew up in a strict Jewish family.
Everything we lived and breathed was business growing up.
What are logistic costs?
What are economies of scale?
What is business diversification?

If I'd said something as dumb as you posted to my dad as a kid he would withhold good from me for 24 hours, first for thinking it then for saying it.

Your parents failed you miserably.

You know if they ever clone a male and female from different stock, and they live to a reproductive age that there will be a shindig of a party where politicians, zoo workers, scientists, and media will all stand around watching two silly mammoths fuck until one disgustingly grunts and empties its foul smelling spooge deep inside the other with a bowel wrenching moan.
Then cheers from all as the salty smell of mammoth cums permeates the vicinity.

The human biome guy is right.
There's so many factors that can change a person through the course of a day.
Just say a transporter copied you when you had a migraine coming on?
Are you then doomed to migraines forever?
The body is more than just neutrons firing its a delicate balance of chemicals, bacteria, bacteriophages, so many variables!
All to be caught and determined at that moment with no real way of defining what is median behaviour for the individual's make up.

It can be intimidating, so I recommend starting with something easy to learn so you won't get discouraged. The dominant easy-to-learn one is the Arduino. It has huge amounts of support online. Once you get hooked controlling things that happen in microseconds, you'll feel like a god and be confident enough to move to professional microcontrollers that have good price/performance but a steeper learning curve.

If you do want to learn PICs, here's a tutorial that sets you up to program them:

I don't claim certainty that there are no other space-faring civilizations. But, based on the brevity of human civilization, I do discount the idea that they're all at the same technological level as us. I also discount the idea that intelligent races would "flow past" and disappear. Obviously I can't predict the whims of spacefaring aliens, but it will certainly be hard for a species to die out once it starts spreading through the galaxy. The most optimistic hope would be that they all have some sort of a non-interventionist philosophy, but it seems more likely that they're just not there.

So I have a worry. My premises:
1. Genetics is advancing quickly and is well-funded: advances have near-term medical payoffs.
2. Ability to get into space is not advancing nearly as quickly: the lower immediate payoffs don't make up for the sheer energy cost.
3. It seems it's much easier to modify a virus/bacterium than to develop a vaccine or new antibiotic.

It therefore seems likely that individuals or small groups will have the ability to create humanity-killing diseases before humanity has the ability to colonize other worlds. With the ability, some will use it (there are various ideological motives, plus plain old craziness). It seems to me that this technological development order would be mirrored in alien civilizations, and could be a big contributor to why we don't see spacefaring civilizations. Anyone have thoughts or ways to avoid that fate?
