Some other anon made a black hole thread, and it got me thinking, what other scientific/mathematical constructs do popsci midwits go apeshit over? Fractals. Redpill me on the Mandelbrot Set. What is this thing? What's the point of it? Why does it look like that?

I'm trying to read Mandelbrot's book on fractal's but I really am not understanding a lot of it. The pictures are cool, but I'm missing the basics and not really understanding how he's doing all this stuff. Anyone capable of some basic explaining or pointing me to a more introductory text?

I'm willing to study physics and mathematics at the same time but I'm not quite sure if I'm going to be able to handle all the courses.
