Scholasticism doesn't hold up today. Reconciling reason and faith is an impossible task. If you don't believe me, go read Occam. Scholasticism makes no sense if you don't already accept the tenants of the christian faith before you begin reasoning.

Some people do value an iPhone over good lit. But I think that's unrelated to STEM vs Humanities.

Start with "The Stranger" by Albert Camus. It's very short, and also widely read. It's both a good insight into Camus's philosophy, and an enjoyable read.

What good is understanding philosophy, and growing wise form literature if you die without ever having acted on it? You need to do things before you do great things. If action doesn't follow learning, then learning was a waste.

You should try to articulate what the value is in literature or poetry.

Consider that many stem majors will, at some point, help to create something which will tangibly improve the quality of life for others.

It's far more likely that over the course of a career a stem major helps the world than a humanities major.

So I've been reading the Greeks slowly, and I have a question about reading order.

I've read the Iliad and The Odyssey, and I'm wondering which of the following I should move on to:

Hesiod
Sophocles
Herodotus

Or can I just jump right to Plato, who I'm most interested in?

Yeah, I don't lean socialist, I read Basic Economics by black economist man, and I've read parts of, and own, The Wealth of Nations. I just wanted to understand Marxism better

On War is an awfully long read, but I am in the mood for some nonfiction. How much history is worked in? Any? And I've heard conflicting reports about how well the philosophy of war holds up today. I think I'll probably start it at least.

It takes a bit to really get going, and you have to invest significant effort to learn and remember the huge cast of characters and locations, but I thought it was a book that rewarded that effort. It's nice to see realistic characters who act like real people.

Alright, I've last time I posted this thread, I got told to read A Game of Thrones. I read the first book, and it was very good. I keep up with the show, and so I was able to focus on the intricacies of the plot because I was familiar with the characters and major plot points.

I need help choosing what to read next, so once again I'm soliciting feedback. I keep a spreadsheet of my books, and any of them which are unread are potential candidates.

To give the first real answer. I read about an hour on a normal day. Page numbers vary drastically depending on whether it's fiction, history, or philosophy (highest to lowest). Ballpark about 100 for fiction, 75 for history, 25 for philosophy

I think I'll go with Hitchhiker's guide then, quite a few people have recommended I read it. Thanks!

So I keep a spreadsheet of the books I own. I'm going to slowly work through them all. I just finished "Death of a Salesman" today, and want suggestions for what I should read next. Green means I've read it, yellow means I've read excerpts, and red is unread.
