Copleston's big problem is that he can't into critical scholarship. another big sin is that he frequently leaves Greek and Latin untranslated (picrel is the worst example). any general history of philosophy is probably polemical in nature and is therefore problematic in giving a "general grasp" on philosophy (this is Russel's sin). Copleston is fine but not very good. reading primary texts is always best :).
