Under the Volcano.
Stoner.
Catch 22.

I try to avoid the depressing ones, though.

One of my favourite books.
Prosewise I'd say it's up there with James Joyce and the story itself is plenty moving.
Remember that there's no shame in using a guide of some kind. Maybe just read the chapter summary on Wikipedia after finishing each chapter.
It's a book well worth the time and effort.

You're both half right.

Immobilised and undernourished bodies lose muscle faster than fat.
I'm a nurse and have to think about this every day with my patients; if we don't get a crapload of calories in them they lose precious muscle tissue because they're immobilised.
If I myself take in fewer calories than I burn, however, I'll lose fat rather than muscle because I walk and work etc.

90% sounds about right with the last 10% being actually using your body rather than staying in bed 24/7.

There is of course also a difference between reduced calorie intake and actual starvation.

What he said.

Why would anyone make a 20-minute video of them reading book titles?
And why would people watch it?

Man: By do something, you mean go out there and get yourself killed? By Bandits, or those Aliens, they won't send your body back to us....because there won't be nothing to send back. Just give up this childish dream and start listening to the facts! A whole group of people were kidnapped and murdered, and you want to dive headfirst into danger?! For Christ’s sake, Mary, talk some sense in to this idiot we call son!

Destin: Dad you can't stop me, I'm eighteen. I can make my own goddamn decisions now. The only idiot here is you, for trying to telling me otherwise.

[Woman walks through the door, followed by two children]

woman: Is everything alright in here? It sounds like a battlefield.

[The men stay quiet staring at each other, she glances at the table and sees the enlistment paper, she walks toward them and picks up the paper]

Woman: You're leaving us? Why?

Destin: Yeah, I’m leavin in a month but im gonna need to leave for the base soon for training.

Woman: You’re just gonna go off into space, and leave us here?

Destin: It’s not like that, mother. I just...

Woman: Than what is it?

Destin: I just want to matter mom.

Man: Just go Destin, im not gonna stop you wanna on some self-righteous guilt trip that'll get you killed, go ahead.

Woman: Robert?! How could you say something like that! To your own son?

Man: Its because hes my son, but I can't stop him. If he believes this what he needs to do, he can do it. He needs to make his own choices now. And if dieing is his choice so be it.

Ext.
[She hugs him, Hugh looks at his son as he walks out the home, saddened. Destin walks out his house angry, He sits on his motor bike staring at his home as the rain pours on him. He drives off, not looking back again]

New scene: 2

[We see Destin driving his motorcycle on a highway. On the right of him a cityscape Bright lights high skyscrapers of an unspecified city. The rain is still pouring and contrasts well with the bright city.

Scrapped it because I thought his motives were weak and it didnt fit with the overall story, but it might get put to use some how.

Here /lit/ my original idea its been scrapped so here you go.

Scene 1

Ext. Outside a house
We open in a sleek home, one might consider it futuristic. Rain is pouring outside and sets and eerie tone for the scene. Theres a motorcycle parked outside.

Int. Inside the house
The house itself is filled space age counters, chairs, a lot of modern architecture. We focus on two men at a table and a letter between them. One an Old man maybe late 40s to early fifties and a boy who lies somewhere between 18-21.

Destin: You can't stop me now. I've already enlisted and I'm leaving for Xenia in a month.

Man: Oh? What exactly are you trying to prove son? That you're different? That you’re better? That you can finally be some little hero out there in the stars? [he lets out a heavy sigh] It’s a deathtrap for you. It’s like you don't even want to be apart of this family.

Destin: That’s because I don’t, Dad. I've never been like you, Donald, or Matthew. I never liked school, I don't get good grades, I don't have their potential, for fucks sake I don’t have any potential! I’ve lived my whole life doing nothing as a fucking nobody! But here, here [points at paper detailing enlistment] I might be able to do something. I can help people, build a new world. Finally stop being a disappointment.
