My favourite? Well by gosh I simply couldn't say! I remember my first year at Hogwarts and being confronted with the Harry Potter tome. Ah yes what days they were. Sitting in the library on cold rainy days with the wind surging against the leaded windows and my candle flicking this way and that, reading all about Harry and his adventures with his great friends Ron and Hermione. I'm friends with Rose Granger-Weasley, she and I volunteer to help tutor the first years who fall behind. A lovely girl, very intelligent but with her father's wicked sense of humour! I must say that the first book in the series is still dearest to my heart, if only for the fact that Harry's journey to Hogwarts and his utter happiness at finding a place here in the magic world is so reminiscent of my own journey here (though I was raised by magical parents) that every time I read through it, usually during the Christmas holidays, I am reminded once more how fortunate I and my peers are to be living, studying and working here at Hogwarts.

Dear students of Hogwarts,

I do hope you are all ready for the New Years Eve Ball being held tonight in the Great Hall. Remember this is a formal event, so do please make sure your shoes are polished and your clothes suitable ironed for the occasion.

Oh and, for those who have already secured dates for the event, please do remember that staff members will be on hand to make sure nobody sneaks away with their date. We do have standards here remember!

Best wishes,
James Delaney-Podmore (Hufflepuff Prefect)

Wrong. Divination is only taught from the third year onwards. The Chamber of Secrets is a novel about Harry and Ron's second year here at Hogwarts.

Hello Errol, I'm afraid Beatrix is still not allowed within the grounds of Hogwarts, and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Ah, Turpin, I haven't heard that surname in a long while! And a Slytherin of course. How is your older brother doing? The last I heard he had become the lead trainer of Ukrainian Ironbellys in all of Europe.

And of course Madame Maxime, while not a staff member or indeed a student at Hogwarts, will actually be present at this year's Yule Ball and is happy to be your "date" (at least for the first dance!)

We Hufflepuffs are known for the kindness we give to the elderly and less able members of our community, and while Rolanda is not in a position for amorous relationships with her students, she has consented (blushingly) to accompanying you to the Ball!

Should any other students who may not be able to secure dates within their cohort wish to attend the Ball with a teacher, then do let me know and I will ask which members of staff are willing!

Well you Ravenclaw's certainly can't be faulted for your assertiveness, however Hermione has received your offer and is currently in Hogwarts tower thinking it over. The rather crass tone of your invitation, not to mention the fact that you admit she is your second choice for a date, must certainly have shaken her confidence!

May I remind you, Severus, that the Shrieking Shack is entirely off-limits to all Hogwarts students. I have informed your head of house about your intentions and I daresay Luna may be tempted to attend the Yule Ball with a more fitting partner!

I must admit that mathematics was always the subject I did worst in back when I attended muggle school!

The previous sorting format allowed for a fair distribution of odds though with a handful of unlucky fellows being sorted as a Squib (!). Since nobody wants that I removed it so that all posters may have a chance to attend Hogwarts.

But, please, if you would care to recommend a more evenly distributed system of sorting then suggest it and I will update it immediately!

Dear Hogwarts students,

The Yule Ball is fast approaching and I encourage you all to pluck up some courage and ask your beloved to be your date!

So, which Harry Potter character are you going to ask this year, fellow wizards and witches?

Don't be like Ronald Weasley, claim them in this thread before someone else does!

The Muggle world is indeed one that is defined by tedium and disillusion. I remember well those years I spent living as a Muggle without even the slightest knowledge that I actually possessed magical abilities. The life of the average Muggle is indeed something that no sane Wizard (there aren't many of us I admit!) would consent to live. Waking before dawn, trudging to your workplace several miles away, spending your day sitting in a chair surrounded by those whose imaginative capacities extend no further than the latest episode of some television show produced in part to generate extravagant advertising profit, travelling home alone weary and annoyed, and then spending a few meagre hours of relative freedom alone or tied to an individual who you realize more and more does not live up to the idealized standard you previously allotted to them in your innocence and your desperate desire to love and to be loved in return. The life of a Squib in fact is more desirable than that of a Muggle. It is no wonder that Argus Filch, who is surrounded by magical individuals yet has no magic powers himself, opts to stay here at the castle rather than living in some cold and lonely bungalow in a far suburb of an anonymous town whose main attraction is the local war memorial. Fortunately for you, dear poster, Slytherin house is at this moment preparing a bed and storage space for you for the upcoming academic year. You obviously possess a great deal of ambition, let us just hope that you use it for good!

It depends on your age I suppose. I first read Harry Potter at the age of about 9 or 10, when I was myself living a Muggle life and was not aware that I too had magical abilities.

The books are tighly plotted, humorous (often employing euphemism to appeal to both young and adult audiences), well researched (the names, potions, locations etc all have refer to something meaningful and are by no means chosen at random), thrilling and above all heart-warming. Not to mention comfy! I myself have not stayed a night in Gryffindor tower, though Rowling depicts what life is like in that particular house with such detail that whenever a thunder storm approaches the school I can't but help want to run upstairs (past Filch!) and spend the evening looking out over the lake from the boys' dormitory room!

I would recommend scheduling a day for yourself and spending it in your pyjamas, in a quiet dimly lit space, reading Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone without looking to discredit or undermine it beforehand. A truly magical novel if ever I've read one, and believe me I read a lot of them as part of the curriculum here!
