But isn't 'great art' largely subjective? Or am I just an idiot?

So, I've been reading A.J. Raffles (currently on 'Further adventures') and I'm struck by the fact that Bunny never seems to get to be quite as awesome as Watson (or maybe I'm just blinded by affection FOR Watson)

Either way, it raised a question in my mind: swap up the sideics. Watson ends up cajoled into helping Raffles commit his burglaries rather than taking up rooms at Baker Street with Holmes.
Likewise Bunny in his debt finds his way to Holmes somehow.

So, who got the better end of the deal /co/? Would Bunny be better as Holmes' assistant than Raffles'? Could Watson's courage and resolve have improved Raffles' own thefts?

I'd imagine it involves actively questioning everything about yourself first, dragging people along, and generally doing weird and eccentric for its own sake.

Cool, I'll look into these.

/lit/, I've recently decided to start reading Lovecraft. Can anyone recommend stories to start out with?

Captcha: other scholar

Amusing and perhaps related.

/lit/, I've been thinking of checking out the Anno Dracula series.
What's the consensus around here on it?

Cool, I got Arthur Conan doyle.

I've never actually read Flashman but bought Ciaphus Cain, which I enjoyed. So... taking that into account... should I look for Flashman?

True. I've never read anything by either of those authors. Nor do I care why you feel knowledge of these particular authors is something you feel necessary for an opinion to be valid.

No offense fella, but you come off as a tad ego maniacal and more or less as a jerk. You're 'so much smarter than your teachers'? Perhaps. But where's your evidence of this thought? Just because you think what they want you to do is boring?
Seriously, lighten the hell up.

Project Gutenberg. That's my go-to for books online.

Don't feel bad, I only managed to read 1984 because it was in 7th grade English Teacher's classroom 'library'.
Good stuff.

I've read one or two Nero Wolfe stories. Definitely a fun read. I dunno why the 'Armchair Detective' concept amuses me so much...

This sounds like it would work better as a Novella.

22, and I read whatever catches my interest at any given moment.

It might be a case of Nostalgia Goggles, but I liked the Diadem series quite a bit. Then again, I'm not certain if that's 'young adult' or some other genre.

I was beginning to think I was the only one who read that series. Got it as a stocking stuffer one year, blew through it and got the other two from the library.

Well, I considered 'nightmare mode' being no Christie...

On a sidenote: has anyone read Ellery Queen? I picked up one of the books from a garage sale but I'm having trouble getting into it. Is it just me?

Let's talk about mystery/detective stories that we enjoy.

Hard mode: No Sherlock Holmes

Anyway, I occasionally go back to 'The Old Man in the Corner' now and again (...Wow, that sounds terrible) written by Baroness Orczy.

Something about the old man's attitude and his calm assertion that 'There is no such thing as a mystery when intelligence is brought to bare upon it's investigation' is fun. In addition to his description as skeletaly thin... heck, his investigation method is something that makes you think 'If I payed just a little bit more attention... I could totally do that.'

So, /lit/ my mother and sister just got a bunch of photos and a few other things from my grandparents. Old family stuff.
Amongst the objects, we found a copy of Black Beauty (the note in the cover indicates it was given as a gift to one of my relatives sometime in the 1890's)

She was wondering how much it might be worth. I figured someone here might know. Not really my genre, but I wouldn't mind keeping it as a nice conversation piece.

Well, why not split the difference and consider it an 'amusing failure of literary analysis'?

Two possibilities: Embellishment by Watson, who is perhaps in on this and attempting to keep the illusion active.

Or: Memory lapses on my own part regarding her later appearances in the stories.

Pick whichever option interests you more.
