Just reading the memorabilia (xenophon) and thought this was funny

Ah, fool! and do you imagine that these lovely creatures infuse nothing with their kiss, simply because you do not see the poison? Do you not know that this wild beast which men call beauty in its bloom is all the more terrible than the tarantula in that the insect must first touch its victim, but this at a mere glance of the beholder, without even contact, will inject something into him—yards away—which will make him man. And may be that is why the Loves are called "archers," because these beauties wound so far off. But my advice to you, Xenophon, is, whenever you catch sight of one of these fair forms, to run helter-skelter for bare life without a glance behind; and to you, Critobulus, I would say, "Go abroad for a year: so long time will it take to heal you of this wound."

Oh also, if you want a good intro to ancient-medieval philosophy, I think "The dream of reason" by Anthony Gottlieb is better than the TTC series on the greeks. The audiobook is pretty well done.

It's on torrent, just search for it because this fucking spam prevention shit is preventing me from posting the link

Yea what he said

also as far as Zen don't forget:
The platform sutra of the sixth patriarch Hui Neng and The Diamond sutra

Of course then there's the pali canon - the oldest extant texts from the theravada indian tradition, there are several good anthologies, and the only easily available full translations are by Bhikku Bodhi.

Of course there are a shit ton of modern books explaining 'buddhism' but they vary in quality and in material depending on the tradition. What are you interested in OP?

Philosophy is already a subset of 'literature' taken as a proper term to mean a written work
I don't see why we need this
That would be like naming the board "Literature and Poetry" or "Literature and books"

What's the point?

Well this is why you start with the presocratics, but if you want a good overview, that's it alright

I recommend "Great Minds of the Western Intellectual Tradition, 3rd Edition"

http://torrentz.eu/a219d531705ee0818fbc268a0d3daaa419e5109a

84 lectures, from the presocratics to Rorty, MacIntyre and Nozick

It's a pretty good intro

Just dropping in once more to promote the glory that is the historical approach. Start with the greeks and work your way up.

Also the teaching company has good lectures

Epictetus and Seneca

There are some more modern books and so called 'neo stoic' books but I'd say stick to the sources. There are some good academic books on the topic like "The stoic life". It might help give you a better historical and philosophical context, especially since all we have are primary sources from the new stoa.

As far as Roman history Tacitus is clearly the master there, Polybius is great as well

start at the beginning, then read major works by Plato and Aristotle and then the Hellenistics at least the stoics Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus and the Epicurean Lucretius.
Then you can start on modern philosophy beginning with Descartes meditations on first philosophy

It's not boring at all, the Greeks are awesome. Plato is a fun read, especially the Socratic dialogues. Just get good translations, old translations are a pain in the ass (ie Jowett, avoid Jowett).

What are your thoughts on elitism /lit/? Can there be a healthy form of elitism? Or is it always oppressive and evil?

Ok so I finally decided to get this. I've only just read Euthyphro and Apology. I'm surprised at how accessible and enjoyable they are. What is a good companion book to read along with this? There a ton of books like this, Blackwell guides, Cambridge companions, etc. What does /lit/ recommend? I'm looking for something scholarly and extensive since I do want to read all these works eventually.

some parts are fun, I liked the part with the prostitutes and the vaginas
other parts are boring, just the main character bitching about his friends
you don't read it for the story that's for sure, it's an experience

but I do use my local used book store...
reminds me I still have a bunch of credit with them, I always give them more books than I buy from them (usually books I've gotten from amazon too) so it all works out

Egotistical, ridiculous, sloppy, ignorant, plagiarizes other texts (first chapter is from Political Correctness: A Short History of an Ideology by the Free Congress Foundation, other parts copies the Unabomber manifesto).

In short, all you expect from someone who spent a year playing WoW and reading Nationalist blogs.

Well Verne is really focused on science in these works. I would talk about how these books are basically a dialogue with the science of the times - electricity to drive ships, marine biology etc. At this time there were no submarines like the nautilus but they did have these technologies. His infodumps might be tedious sometimes but Verne was really the first author to have a dialogue with real world science and use it in literature so it's kind of a big deal.
I'd get a good overview of the history of science and use it for this.
