Love this book so far. About 600 pages in. I personally like Steeply and Marathe's discussions.

Haha, is a bit cheesy now that you mention it. Not a huge deal though, just a name.

After a while of idly scanning his magazine, Xenos decided he'd take a quick walk to ease his nerves. He placed the magazine on his off-white wicker patio table and headed down the stairs to the sidewalk. As he walked he encountered the many staples of a North American suburban summer. He'd passed at least four barbeques in the twenty or so minutes he'd been walking, and countless amounts of children playing. He decided he had walked far enough and turned back to head home. Xenos arrived home just before sunset. When he approached the steps to his home he noticed two men in BCAF Suits on his front porch.

I'm probably a terrible writer, but I need to write a short story for class and this is what I have so far, any feedback?

It was an early September evening, the air smelled of burning charcoal and the sounds of children playing could be heard all around. The sun was getting ready to set, and Xenos decided he'd enjoy as much of it as possible before it did. He took a seat on the front porch of his rented home and wasted no time thumbing through the pages of this weeks issue of The Panacea. As he did he couldn't help but be distracted by the seemingly endless flow of thoughts in his mind. Xenos, just having turned eighteen, had recently enlisted in the Bicontinental Air Force and was scheduled to ship out to boot camp in less than a week.
Up until recently, Xenos never considered military service as a possible career path. In the wake of the attacks by the Asian Front for Continental Unity on several NAEUA bases however, he felt compelled to do his part. The attacks, though widely regarded to be unwarranted cries for attention from AFCU leaders, greatly shook the foundation of the North American European Alliance's economy. The severity of the damage seemed to unground the commonly held belief that their transatlantic union was an invincible entity, plummeting stock prices in the wildly invested government backed QuadriCo. Since the attacks the two massive states had been engaged in relentless combat. Xenos had known the risk when he enlisted. Even as he scanned the pages of The Panacea there was nothing but coverage of the savage fighting. Stories that would make even the toughest of men cringe.

What are the benefits of running with hand weights?

I ran quite a bit over the summer, and lost a good 30 pounds, but now i'm lacking any sort of noticeable muscles in my arms and I was thinking if I ran with weights I could kill two birds with one stone so to speak. Would running with weights work my arms out at all (probably a stupid question)? How much weight would it have to be to expect any results? I don't want to run with too much as I don't want to find my self unable to complete my run. Any advice?

Still here, just hanging around a bit.

I'm not really reading the footnotes at all the first time around, i've read elsewhere that when you first tackle the book to avoid the footnotes and then give it a second read (should you be so inclined) with them as you'll have a better grip on things etc. As for people saging etc I can't really think about why they would. Generally speaking its a pretty good book, but i'm assuming the ones saging are the pretentious people mentioned somewhere else in this thread.

But yeah, I've read from around page 120 to page 300 in a little under a week, which for me is really something as i've never been a heavy reader lol

Sup /lit/,

Tried to make a thread about Infinite Jest the other day, it failed miserably, so lets give it another shot.

I'm about 300 pages into the book and some stuff is starting to make more sense to me I'm thinking that theres a connection between the high grade LSD that Pemulis has and Hal's freakout at that college interview from the beginning of the book. I'm not entirely positive at this point but I know when Pemulis describes it, he mentions the fact that one of the people who used it never was mentally stable again. So i'm kind of expecting Hal to try it and get absolutely fucked up. Also, another thing I found crazy was Hal's conversation with Orin about Himself's death. Its also kind of picking up on the connection between the P.G.O.A.T. and Himself, so i'm a bit excited to finally figure that out.

But yeah, good book so far. Your thoughts?

Our city did this "Big Read" thing where the entire city was challenged to read this book, inevitably leading to my school making it mandatory reading for English classes. Theres probably nothing more annoying than having to hear about the same chapter in a book 49 minutes a day, for three days when you finished the chapter the day it was assigned. Really, it kinda made me resent the book.

That being said, super bump.

Just got done reading Hal's conversation with his brother.

Its absolutely crazy how his Dad died and shit. Head in the microwave? Holy. Also, major twist towards the end when he admits he felt guilty about saying something smelled good. Its kind of like "What the fuck" but at the same time like "Brooooo that sucks".
I'm kinda letting all of this sink in (just read about 45 more pages) and i'll probably have a lot more to say tomorrow. If this threads not still up when I get back from school i'll start up a new one. Until then, g'night.
