I guess the first thing I would say in response to you is that I don't really consider critical theory worthwhile in the first place. I'm not a Marxist and I don't accept tenets of Marxism. I accept that the all of our culture needs to be examined, but almost all Continental philosophy is absolute drivel and it really has no place in worthwhile intellectual discourse.

It is because a lot of these old novels were published as serials. Each summary marks a new chapter, sort of like the introductions you see at the start of anime episodes.
