Kyouko was kind of thrown in as an afterthought, and the title character herself was surprisingly void of characterization and even any interesting interactions (though maybe I'm just hating on the silly ending that goes against everything in the rest of the show). The other characters were pretty good. Mami was probably the highlight of the entire thing because she was well characterized in a short time and she pretty much embodied the theme for the entire show, not to mention her leitmotif was by far the best piece of music in the show.

Shit tons of work and low completion rates. You'll probably end up going back into the job market in a few years with no PhD. Even if you do finish, expect to take at least a few years to get a shitty position. Maybe you'll work your way up to some decent position eventually, but it's not likely. Then again, even shitty positions in academia are still decent. If you stick it out and love your subject, you might actually have a decent, happy life.

It's a matter of degree. You lose some meaning when reading another's work, since the medium of the book doesn't perfectly capture his or her ideas. You lose yet more meaning when that work is rewritten by a third party in another language, since that imperfect representation of the author's ideas is then imperfectly represented. Translating a translation would then further the process, and so on.

The only reason a translation would be preferable to the original would be if the translator was a better writer than the original writer, but even in that case the original would be preferable if your goal was to understand the original author.

How much meaning is lost in translation is dependent on an immense number of factors, such that it's essentially impossible to make generalizations across the whole of translations regarding their quality or value. Arguments can however be made by examining these factors in relation to a single work. This is why people might say, for instance, that Borges' works aren't worth reading in translation. It's worth noting, however, that this kind of analysis is highly subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt.

But yeah, in English it's hard. It also depends on your style and what perspective you're writing from.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is pretty good practice. He's fairly modern so it's not too hard to read his stuff, and it'll help you build vocabulary. Also, he's just an amazing writer in general, so there's that too.

If Marquez is too hard, you could go for something even easier like Allende. She's not as good as Marquez, but she might be a better starting point if you're completely new to Spanish literature.

It's not really an erotic book. I think the most obscene passage in the book was him getting off while she was sitting on his lap. The actual sex isn't described in detail.

Propaganda is better described as the presentation of information in a way to influence someone's beliefs.

It doesn't have to be negative. The word has a negative connotation, but things like DARE, Sexual Assault Awareness Week, etc. can also be described as propaganda. Just because it's propaganda doesn't mean that it's biased and doesn't mean that it's incorrect.

Most really good literature is going to lose something in translation. Granted, translations are often better than not reading something at all, but you have an internet connection, so you have the opportunity to learn whatever language you want.

LNs are generally light reading, like YA stuff here. There are some that are respected like Boogiepop, but for the most part they're not taken for serious literature.

Japan has had a field day with hikikomori stories. Most of it isn't translated, though.
