The only issue I have here is that as a soldier we are trained to dehumanize the enemy and visiting the enemy's graveyard is softcore, plus the graveyard staff would staff would look at you like wtf

all this "emotional soldier" nonsense is just from hollywood and hipster books for civilians, no realism in them. IRL soldiers don't give a shit, the only trauma that comes from killing a man is the visceral experience, not the aftermath. a soldier who feels guilty about his deeds will replay the moment of the killing in his head and how horrible it was, but he won't think about the ripple effect of the enemies death. he certainly wouldn't visit the graveyard

pretty much this

more accessible = more bullshitters

the publishing industry is entering what happened to the music industry with the advent of audio file pirating

while literary agents, publishers etc., may be capitalist shitheads blah blah blah they serve as a useful buffer to prevent the justin beiber wannabes from spamming stores with their createspace.com-stephenie-meyer-fanfic monstrosities.

the fact that this chick pretty much got rich off hawking her twilight regurgitation on a legit marketplace like the kindle store just makes it that much harder for published novelists to be taken seriously

I guess I'm going to have to start reading critics unless I want to trudge through piles of this bullshit

If fantasy floats your boat, you will enjoy Heroics for Beginners. It's a satire that hilariously shits on the genre and its authors, and is as trashy as its title suggests. 5 out of 5 LOLS and 2 thumbs up my anus

You are now aware that Sturgeon's Law means Western Canon literature is shitty and so are you.

But on a more positive note, French literature general. I'm looking to learn the language and I want to read some authors in the original to acclimate. Hugo seems horrible in English translations that I've seen though, maybe he wasn't meant to be translated.

Ultimately, after reading many novels that you enjoy and many how-tos (not necessarily on formal literary theory) you will develop your own system of rules, what fits and what doesn't, until you can produce fiction as easily as an email or text message. From then on it only a matter of persistence, continual learning, and, if you want to become a successful commercial novelist, a few truckloads of luck.

Regarding "writer's block", I'll only suggest Robert Orlen Butler's how-to, "Dreamscapes". Read this book, learn to apply its techniques, and you will never suffer from procrastinating from writing again.

Sincerely,

Random Anonymous Writer On The Internet

The thing about writing "skill" is that most people do not realize what it is, so they don't know how to practice for it. It is very much a skill like sports or singing or painting.

How to learn how to write (fiction):

1) Read only authors you very much enjoy from the first few pages. If a book is uninteresting for more than a few pages, drop it and move on. You can only learn to write well from books that are written well, do not waste your time reading shitty books.

2) Read how-to books. All the time. For the rest of your life. How-tos are essentially technical manuals that contains different techniques for improving your writing, you choose what you like and discard the rest until you have formed your own school. You will eventually read enough how-tos to be able to discern which ones will contain useful information and which ones are useless.

3) Write as slowly as you need to. The popular maxim "write every day" is bullshit. You are better off writing one page of gold than a thousand pages of garbage, because at the end of the day you can look at your gold and realize that you have accomplished something. From there you can write a few pages of gold every few days and have a novel in one year. Once you have written one page of truly great writing, your confidence will soar and even in the harshest times you will know that you have the potential to become a great novelist.

I am a US Army Soldier. Many of you are liberal college kid faggots. So let's have a discussion.

The argument I hear most about why I should quit my job is that the United States is an evil imperialist system of oilmongers who only use me to take money from poor third-worlders, but consider the following:

1) How is your job within the same capitalist system any different than mine? We both earn money for other people because for whatever reason, we lack the drive or ability to be financial alpha dogs. So you say I'm just a pawn in the scheme of a bunch of old rich white guys? How are you employed civilians any different? Even if this is true, consider the invasion of Kuwait. Would you rather have GW and co. controlling the world economy or crazy arab dictator #1,453,453,242,342 who may or may not use the funds to try and nuke your ass?

2) Contrary to popular belief, the military is still integral to protecting this nation from foreign threats. There are soldiers trained to deal with secret security clearance situations that don't make it into the media. So how can you say LOL THE MILITARY DON'T PROTECT ME FROM SHIT when you aren't even allowed to what the threats are?
