I wanted to create a character that would scare my father, & by doing so I needed to create a character that scares the father inside of me.

The book's inspirations were Salinger's "De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period" & Rodger's "My Twisted World." Solipsism and isolation are the themes, & the narrator constructs his own straitjacket of errors, up until the final chapters where I really wanted to highlight the locks on Horia's isolation turning, clicking shut forever.

Initially the plan was a Notes From Underground part 1: the philosophy & then part 2: the philosophy meets reality, but I realized the truth and the horror of Horia would be part 1 expanding like a tumor as he slides deeper into solipsism and loneliness.

On a lighter note, it was fun trying to build a faux philosophy out of the shallowest of the shallow bullshit floating around the internet. I'm glad people are finding it fun.

But yes and no, it started with imagining a few people as my son, then the idea of Horia became of magnet for all the shallowness and isolation the 2010s could provide.
