Well, if you go by the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contemporary_literature
It says "Contemporary literature is literature which is generally set after World War II[citation needed]. " or another says, "The somewhat malleable term "contemporary literature" is usually applied with a post-1960 cut off point. " and many more definitions elsewhere.

I don't know if they're trash because I haven't read them, but if you don't mind short fiction you can try reading: The Mammoth Book of Steampunk or The Mammoth Book of Steampunk Adventures.

It's more of a prevention from falling into an endless loop of reading the first several books over and over again. Probably be better to read summaries or something else that sums it up. You'll remember or you won't.

I'm interested in what you wanted to be the response.
"That's the wrong sort of diversity!" - criticism that it's fake and harmful
"This is why anything that says 'diverse' can't be trusted." - snarl word/self-terminating cliché
"Why isn't it 'merit'" - confused about how any of this works

Were these what you were going for, assuming they aren't also you?

>enjoy
In what way? Anger, vindication, contempt? It's all signaling and nothing else ought to be expected.

>read all the books
Because they know what the strengths are

>dropped
Because they know the weaknesses

>not wot
To draw in more general fantasy viewers

>don't even know fantasy
To draw in more viewers in general

I assume that's the thought process anyway.
It's to be expected of design by committee, which very common for big productions such as these. To me it's just eyeroll-worthy corporatespeak that isn't enjoyable at all.

On a different note, for people who read the Cradle, you may not have read "The Savior of Garden's Gate" - Will Wight (2019), which is a short story about Ziel. Turns out not all of the story is in the books.

Contemptuous and pretentious.

It amazes me how many are determined to try to have concepts that are suitable for one medium but another. Maybe some wouldn't mind it in what they are reading, but a lot of games have many small repetitions of the same actions over and over again. I would think that would be much more boring in prose. It would almost have to be written like a field report summary rather than the characters doing it themselves.

>>19599855
There are a lot of adventurer type guilds in games and other media. The first one that came to mind for me was Arc The Lad. Made in Abyss is more just for recognition since clearly nothing except death prevents them from going however far and there aren't really any helpful functions.

Reading "hard sf" for the characters isn't advisable. Whether you'll care about the characters is entirely a personal matter, so that'd probably be difficult to rec for.

Is all entertainment ultimately nothing more than time wasters? Is there a purpose to entertainment other than childish escapism? Asking this unironically, having an existential crisis over wondering if entertainment is sufficiently meaningful.
