I've heard quite a few people call Infinite Jest pretentious, because it has footnotes or uses big words or something, without having read the book.

It's one of those books where the stuff that's not on the page is what makes it good. You'll like it if you're a pretty sharp guy.

I think the book just takes a total fucking nosedive once that little bitch-boy John enters the story, though I think that everything prior to that point is solid.
