What I mean is that both Murakami and Anderson are well known and popular, and also often in the collections of people who enjoy high-quality lit/film, but neither of them have a great deal of importance when compared to truly great authors/filmmakers. Basically, they can be fun to consume and are of higher quality than the majority, but I wouldn't say they warrant any serious study
