I own a Kindle PaperWhite.

>How easy are Kindles/Kodos/Readers to use?
Very. Just tap the screen to flip the page. Tap the left edge of the screen to go to the previous edge. All the other functionality you would want is intuitive enough and explained in the tutorial that plays when you turn it on for the first time.

>And can I put pdfs and word documents on them too?
I haven't tried either. I'm not sure about Word documents (which, as I'm sure you know, can be saved as PDFs easily enough), but there is a corner of Amazon's website which explains how to put PDFs on a Kindle.

>As a kid I loved collecting books and owning them, but e-readers seem to be super practical for just getting information and storing books. I don't want to carry around a million books with me all the time.
I procrastinated on buying an e-reader for a long time because I like reading physical books as well. My mom got a Kindle, and it didn't spark my interest in them anymore. I got a PaperWhite a few months ago because it looked decent, I had some money to spare, and I figured I could get complete works and e-book exclusive stuff. To my surprise, I enjoy reading just about anything on it. [Nevertheless, I still read plenty of physical books as well.] I can easily imagine some people not liking it, but I think most of the people (such as yourself) who find the e-readers questionable would be pleasantly surprised to get one.

Or kissing.

His facial hair's got lips of its own - like a fit down from where (I'm guessing) his mouth is.

The one by Ron Chernow.

Joseph J. Ellis also wrote a good one.

I recommend you look up the History of Philosophy podcast on iTunes and listen to the first couple of episodes (and perhaps the preceding ones on Socrates). Even if you have zero knowledge of Plato going in, those should set you up with anything you might want to know before you dive in.

Happy reading, OP!

I love the Kindle Paperwhite.

It doesn't fit in OP's budget though.

I just sit for 20 minutes and focus on my breathing. [Getting a Zafu cushion has made sitting much more bearable and the mediation perhaps even more fruitful - though it's certainly not necessary.]

If you're looking for an easy way into mediation, I recommend the (very short and very cheap) e-book Meditation for Beginners 22-Day Course by Vern Lovic, M.A. There isn't much you'll learn in the way of science or spirituality or anything like that, but it'll give you some very digestible way to get into the world of meditation.

Sitting certainly isn't great. Diet and exercise are certainly important. I wouldn't actually worry about it. 5'1'' isn't a bad height. That said, I'd certainly recommend at least going for a walk or jog at least a few times a week. I would emphasize eating stuff that's good for you and trying to be conscientious of how much not-so-good stuff you're consuming in comparison to how much physical activity you're getting. I'm not proposing anything rigorous. I'm just saying keeping that stuff in mind is probably a good idea.

[And I'm sorry I don't know what other problems you mentioned. I just hopped in the thread by replying to the OP. I didn't actually read all of the discussion that occurred.]

This is more or less what I do.

I have a moleskine in which I jot down ideas and reminders. When I want to focus on and flesh out the ideas, I do some typing.

In the case of math and writing poetry, it may be worth noting, I use printer-paper/cheap spiral notebooks.

I personally didn't suffer much from clinical depression, but I did have fits of anxiety throughout my life. I was reading and implementing this book along with the teachings of the paleo diet around the same time that I was also starting to meditate regularly and practice mindfulness (at least as it's been described to me in the casual reading I've done). That combination has been doing wonders for me.

I also got the book for my mom after my maternal grandma died. Of course, it's not like she snapped right back into her jolly-old-self. But she did like the book.

If you don't eat fish, can you do fish oil? I just get Kirkland-brand fish oil supplements from Amazon. [I eat fish myself, but I know I don't get enough omega-3 to balance out my omega-6 intake.]

Also note that you can buy eggs enriched with omega-3.

I didn't expect How to Solve It by G. Polya to be written with instructors in mind in addition to students.

>> No.3700047 [View]

It's pretty good.

The chapter on dieting is really lame that. For that, I'd point you to any of Loren Cordain's books (namely The Paleo Diet). Note that he's actually received a good number of letters in which people claim that his advice/guidelines helped clear up a good deal of the depression/anxiety issues they'd be struggling with for years.

Quijote comes to mind, though I imagine he's pretty tough to read in Spanish.
