Because the calendar itself is Roman and was in use long before Christ was born. It's just the years that were changed when Christianity became popular, not the calendar. Most places wouldn't have been counting the years in relation to Jesus until hundreds of years after his death too. Fun fact: the first month is actually supposed to be March.

People fight wars primarily over resources, not because of ideological or cultural differences. Anybody that says otherwise is either stupid or lying.

No Idea what you're talking about, but I just got "The Tao of Pooh" in the mail today and I can't wait to crack it open.

Is it Brussels? I wrote Munich, but I have no idea where that pic was actually taken.

This is a terrible question. Your teacher is an idiot. I can only assume that by "reaches his utopia" your teacher actually means "attains his glory." To which the answer is yes.

>That feel when I can carry around an entire library with me in my coat pocket
>that feel when I no longer have to pay for most books
>that feel when I read more because of the convenience

Seriously though, these paper vs ebook arguments are dumb. They each have their place. Illustrated books aren't going to be worthwhile on an ereader, and there's something to be said about amassing a collection of physical books too.

I just got mine today, and lemme tell you, IT'S FUCKING BOMB YO!

There's a progress bar at the bottom that tells you how far into the reading you are. For me at least, it has the side effect of urging me to read, since I've been programmed to respond to progress bars by years of playing video games.

As somebody mentioned before, it depends on your region. You're basically limited to whichever group is the largest/richest in your area.

It's pretty bad from a story telling perspective, but it can be useful depending on your field of study or interests though.

Not quite for the same reasons as a Pynchon novel, but a lot of kids books take on a whole different meaning when you reread them as an adult.

Nothing can change the nature of man. That's why it's our nature, because it's inherent and constant. All you can do is account for man's nature and establish mechanisms that achieve the desired behavior through manipulation.

not sure how to feel about that.

Ozymandias would be closer to an ubermensch than dr manhattan, but not really because his intellect and strength were a superpower. So he's not really anymore of an ubermensch than almost any other comic book hero.

I've always seen Rorschach as a Kantian, but if you don't want to be specific the correct term would be deontologist. And whether or not you see Ozymandias as evil largely depends on your own philosophical beliefs. There's a lot of people that actually see him as the good guy in the story.

Better prose than most, but It doesn't really tell the reader much of anything. You're just rambling without really describing anything. I think you need to bear in mind Vonnegut's advice on writing; Every sentence must do one of two things–reveal character or advance the action.

You guys should read up on story structures. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcmiqQ9NpPE
That lecture is a pretty good one that illustrates what I'm talking about. When broken down into their basic forms, all stories of a similar nature look the same. The room for originality lies in the characters, setting, and relevance to modern life.

Classical Greek understood this and their plays were nothing but a bunch of guys rewriting the same myths and stories over and over. Euripides wrote Hippolutus twice because people didn't like his first version. You'd be surprised by how original you can be when recycling plots.

It isn't obvious at all. If it were then lists like this wouldn't exist, and there wouldn't be people defending them. I'm sorry I don't find peoples clear lack of understanding about a topic I care about to be funny.

>> No.2338677 [View]

>>2338658

Feel free to give me an example of a good original work then. When boiled down to their basic forms, all stories fit into a handful of archetypes. All romance novels looks the same, as do all crime thrillers, fantasy, sci fi, etc. There isn't much room to change basic story structures without making them unsatisfying for the reader. You definitely can write a series of words that have never been written before, but if it's any good then it will be easy to compare to something that's already come before it.

I think pointing out the ignorance of whoever wrote that list is reason enough. Whoever wrote that has obviously no idea what writing a story is about.
