i like lajos egri. the podcast/blog "helping writers become authors" is very informative. stephen king and ray bradbury have popular books on writing.
search irc #bookz or a torrent site for "writing" and you'll find a lot of stuff. get any/all of it because if you're a beginner then anything will help.

this is a good start.
i think "fall" is too obvious a choice.
"desperate" doesn't make sense.
"die" is too strong. toil can't die, it can die down.
"dust" works but "lazy" is bad. it is a word of ease and lack of care which doesn't fit your theme.

Let me break this down for you. The races of Star Trek represent our social subcultures.

Starfleet: preppies
Klingons: metalheads
Romulans: goths
Vulcans: geeks

The galaxy is high school.
Now you know.

Feeling Fucked Up
By Etheridge Knight

Lord she’s gone done left me done packed / up and split
and I with no way to make her
come back and everywhere the world is bare
bright bone white crystal sand glistens
dope death dead dying and jiving drove
her away made her take her laughter and her smiles
and her softness and her midnight sighs—

Fuck Coltrane and music and clouds drifting in the sky
fuck the sea and trees and the sky and birds
and alligators and all the animals that roam the earth
fuck marx and mao fuck fidel and nkrumah and
democracy and communism fuck smack and pot
and red ripe tomatoes fuck joseph fuck mary fuck
god jesus and all the disciples fuck fanon nixon
and malcolm fuck the revolution fuck freedom fuck
the whole muthafucking thing
all i want now is my woman back
so my soul can sing

it starts in america but leaves for singapore, grenada, and africa.

there's also geo alec effinger's when gravity falls which is set in the middle east. but it's more of an action book.

you need to get rid of this

also i think your description goes on too long. it dulls the impact of the situation. he should freak out first instead of looking at all the details of the room.

The Belgariad:
It's Star Trek set in high fantasy where each nation has one stupid defining trait which is just lazy characterization. The second series isn't worth reading at all. But I like the first quest and the little romance he has with the tsundere Asuka. The Belgariad defines safe and comforting reading.

ray bradbury and stephen king have books with good writing advice.

seconding the "write great fiction" series.

i have mixed feelings about joseph campbell. it's good to know about archetypes but there's a the danger of descending into cliche.

i recommend cross-training:
read plays to learn dialogue. read books on acting to learn characterization. read non fiction travel and adventure stories to learn about setting. read poetry to develop your prose.

most writing books will be helpful for beginners.
