"rather profound analysis"
lol wat

"some of philosophy’s greats"
lol wat

That's about as far as I read.
This is clearly not an academic essay. This is high school polemics.

divulge: To make known (something private or secret).

Didn't bother reading the rest. It certainly comes as no surprise that you're a Hunger Games reader.

Consider the alternative...

You die and you live in the afterlife forever...

..forever..

...forever

...................forever

Have you ever thought about what forever might mean?

It's the scariest thing I can imagine.

Be glad that there is no god and your life is worthless and nothing has any meaning.
Seek out sensual pleasure.

In the end, everyone always does what they truly want to do - because if they didn't, they would have done otherwise.

>Implying anything is real.
>Implying there is such thing as a non-fictional reality outside your head.
>Implying non-fiction books aren't the fictional product of a subjective author.

There is no objective truth, everything you see/think is subjective and thereby fictional.

Reading quality novels is entertaining and thought provoking. That's why I read fiction.

Why do anything?

>I just want to preface my statement by noting that this thread is utterly inane.

That being said, as a philosophical theory there is still nothing that trumps nihilism.

So if we're using philosophical theories as the basis for deciding who is the greatest philosopher, then we have to look at the origins of nihilism.

Contrary to what most fags on this board think, Nietzsche was not the first philosopher to write about nihilism. In fact, he wasn't even close.

The earliest philosophical positions associated with a nihilistic outlook are those of the Skeptics of Ancient Greece.

Pyrrho (circa 360 BC – 270 BC) is generally credited as being the first Skeptic philosopher.

Therefore, according to this logic, Pyrrho is the greatest philosopher in history.

I know that fucking feel, OP.

I know that feel.

Currently halfway through Ulysses. Anna Karenina and War and Peace await me. Countless classics covered already (I saved the longest till last).

> first 150 pages: a mind-numbing barrage of shire innocence/ awful tom bombadil poetry

> hideously jovial tone throughout the whole series - dramatic tension never achieved

> black and white battle of good vs evil. conservative christian values reinforced. monarchy justified. whole world must wait for "the return of the king" to be saved. the people are helpless without their noble better.

> pages and pages of "world building" - a fantasy euphemism for "i'm a boring writer and I have nothing else to add at this point so I'm going to up the word count in order to increase sales" -> just ask GRRM.

The book doesn't do justice to the film.
It's only famous because Tolkien was the first to popularise the genre now known as epic fantasy.

Christian conspiracy designed to raise money for political purposes. Donations will be used to fund Rick Santorum's Republican Presidential Campaign. Santorum will outlaw abortion and deny access to contraceptives. Teenage hillbillies will spawn a new generation of child soldiers - aka the Conservative Resistance Army. The Pope is involved, the Archbishop of Canterbury is involved, and The Illuminati probably has a hand in it.

#Kony2012. Am I doing it right?

In my opinion this is D's best book. My only criticism is that his incessant preaching can become quite irksome.

Basically the book is all about the fact an honest/good (but naive) man can't get by in godless bourgeois Russian society. The Idiot is a perfect christian - a jesus figure. He meets some great characters (Nastasya Filippovna is probably my favourite female character in all of literature), and the plot revolves around their romantic/financial dealings. It gets slightly bogged down in the middle with trivial affairs, but the chilling ending is definitely worth sticking around for.

By all means, read it, especially if you like D. However, remeber that D is Russian, and, as with all Russians, he feels the need to take a particularly long time to get to the point. Mayhaps you'd be better off reading one of his shorter novels if you don't have the patience (nothing to be ashamed of).

For all the people that said no for "moral reasons" (lol @morality in the 21st century. Did you miss the moon landing? You're not going to heaven, you pleb.), what if the old woman was a black man?

Is your morality prejudiced?

Of course it is because all morality is subjective.
