I think any theory of the content of Blood Meridian which fails to properly take into account the epilogue is suspect. If McCarthy considered it to be superfluous to the book's meaning he would not have included it, being as it in severed from the rest of the text in both form and content.

To me the book is about the nature of civilisation. The kid fails to save himself because he does not belong to any form of civilisation. In fact, he falls in with a man who is actively trying to destroy it (the Judge tries to expunge various markers of civilisation from the memory of man over the course of the story, keeping their knowledge for himself). He keeps a Bible towards the end of the book, but lacking the skill of reading it is useless to him. Contrast this with the man in the epilogue, who is skilled with the abstract two-handled device he wields, and who through his work with it irresistably carries others along with him. That is the nature of civilisation - it is based in tools, in manual, material skill. The judge only once teaches his fellow gangmembers any skill, and it is how to make gunpowder.

I actually preferred it as a reading experience to Blood Meridian. I'm not saying in terms of literary significance or quality that it's on that book's level, but as a story, as an experience in page-turning, I think it's better and honestly more powerful. It has a number of cartoonish elements, like Blood Meridian does, but in contrast to that novel it also has a very stable and solid sense of community and place.

No fucking idea, brother. But let us know what it's like when you actually read it.
