I'm not trying to jump on the misogyny train, but I agree with of mice and men but cuckoos nest probably was incredibly misogynist. Kesey believed industrial society was feminizing men through making everything homogenous. So Ratchet probably did represent women as a whole and it was more or less "cunts ruin everything."

Atonement by Ian McEwan is a good "cunts ruin everything" description though.

Usually what happens is men get sick of women and fuck off to some desolate wasteland and make something new and innovative. Women disregard it until it turns spectacularly profitable. Then the women come and demand a cut of the prices and they put up drapes and menstruate all over the mens favorite recliners and make rules to make this new place less free and less fun and more safe and protective of women's delicate feelings. So the men fuck off to some new desolate wasteland.

I thought the moral was basically "shit happens". While the downfall is brought on by Curley's Wife, a lot of sympathy is given to her too, and she didn't cause any of the other loser characters problems. I think it leans more to how uncaring the universe is or something along those lines. Like a tragedy that can't totally be put on one person but more on human nature itself framed in the early American 20th century.

nope

Several large studies of mobility in developed countries in recent years have found the US among the lowest in mobility.[3][7] One study (“Do Poor Children Become Poor Adults?")[7][11][17] found that of nine developed countries, the United States and United Kingdom had the lowest intergenerational vertical social mobility with about half of the advantages of having a parent with a high income passed on to the next generation. The four countries with the lowest "intergenerational income elasticity", i.e. the highest social mobility, were Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Canada with less than 20% of advantages of having a high income parent passed on to their children. There's actually quite a lot of evidence out there than Social Mobility is much, much lower than people imagine in the UK and US.

If you like, there's an interesting discussion of it here from the perspectives of surname studies, sport and investment & wealth by three experts.

I love this: "i have study!" Yeah well i have family which has hopped up and down that social mobility ladder so much you would think it wasn't a ladder but fire-pole with a trampoline at the bottom of it. Just because other countries also have great social mobility doesn't mean the us didnt basically invent the concept in the modern world and isnt still very "socially mobile" to this day. Can it be more mobile? Of course, but nothing is perfect.
