Fang Yuan was in deep green robes that had been torn to shreds. His hair was disheveled and his entire body was covered in blood. He looked around.

The bloody robes waved lightly in the mountain breeze like a war flag.

Fresh blood flowed from the numerous wounds on the body. Just by standing there for a short while, Fang Yuan had already accumulated a large pool of blood beneath his feet.

Enemies surrounded him all around; there was already no way out.

It was a forgone conclusion that he would die here.

Fang Yuan understood his situation clearly, but even in the face of death his expression did not change, it was calm.

His gaze was quiet, his eyes like deep pools of water in a well, so deep that there seemed to be no end.

The major factions of justice that had surrounded him were not just the experienced elders, but also young and talented heroes. Around the heavily surrounded Fang Yuan, some were roaring, some were sneering; there were eyes that were gleaming with light, some holding onto their wounds while looking on fearfully.

They did not move; everyone was wary of Fang Yuan’s final attack.

For 6 hours this tense moment went on until the evening came, the sun casting its rays upon the side of the mountain. In that moment, it was as if the place was on fire.

Fang Yuan, who had been silent as a sculpture the entire time, slowly turned his body.

The group of warriors was suddenly alerted and they all took a big step backwards.

By now the gray mountain rock beneath Fang Yuan’s feet had long been stained a deep red. Due to losing too much blood, his face had become deathly pale; in the afterglow of the sunset, it suddenly had a brilliant luster upon it.

Looking at the setting sun, Fang Yuan lightly laughed. “The sun sets above the blue mountain, the autumn moon with the wind of spring. The morning is fine like hair and night is like snow, whether you succeed or fail when you look back there’s nothing left.”

As he said this, memories of his previous life on Earth emerged before his eyes.

It's misleading because of all the terrible things Fang Yuan does he doesn't actually rape anyone in the main story, no "took away my body's purity". He absolutely has the opportunity to but refrains. Maybe in his past life he did.

It's worth reading if you already like wuxia slop or other forms of amateur web-lit. If you're a normal person who is accustomed to reading normal books, you'll find quality of the translation and the depth of the narrative to be sub-standard and off-putting. The edgy excerpts aren't even the main attraction of the story. It's the muddled juxtaposition of Righteous and Demonic way of thinking, the hypocrisy and similarities between the good guys and bad guys, and especially Fang Yuan's definition of evil during his growth. Yes he is evil, scheming, a general piece of shit, but the world is also hostile and the society he was born in practically considered him to be below dogshit. Plus he doesn't find it orgasmic to do what he does, being purely pragmatic about it. There's also Ren Zhu's stories which to me seem to be the author's opinions on the concepts of human life.

And while it may be a power fantasy, characters intelligence or the power system isn't buttfucked by MC plot armor. He was quite literally going to die in the end of chapter 200 if it wasn't for the power that was established at the beginning of the story

Said main character's whole arc is about trying to turn back into a man, not really a true troon. Or consider the rapist gang who get turned gay by ZLY and are completely distraught about it, losing their great joy in life. Author writes with a degree of heteronormativity that's basically unknown in the West these days. It's so obvious, as far as he's concerned that men are men and women are women, that men and women are supposed to be together. Everything else is an aberration, a joke.

Anyway, the real meat of the story is about the conflict between duty and being true to one's self, making one's way in the world, searching for freedom, perseverance, overcoming fate.

I was curious to try Xianxia type novels. Picked out Renegade Immortal after seeing some posts about it a year ago. I really tried reading it, but dropped it after 50 chapters or so. While it wasn't a bad time per se, and it had so many alien concepts to me, which intrigued me, it was ruined by terrible translation. Like, you constantly are not sure of things you read in any given chapter - you read a chapter and you at least have 2-3 questions (I'm not talking about in-plot mysteries, but about what should've been clearly stated information). I honestly would liken it to machine translation levels. When even of the most mundane and basic things leaves you with questions, it makes it not worth reading in English imo. It seems like it would be a good read if you knew Chinese, but now reading passages from Reverend Insanity, just confirms my suspicion that almost anything in this genre will be badly translated. What's up with that? Also, I remember googling "Renegade Immortal bad translation" to see if translation gets better later, just to find reddit posts defending the translation as "great". That's when I gave up. Currently I'm learning Japanese. I wonder if Chinese to Japanese translations are just as bad, if they exist.
