Any good Fantasy or Sci-Fi books that contain Utopias/Dystopias? I'm more interested in exploring the idea and how authors envision the concept of Paradises and Utopias, than good plot, though that would be nice as well.

Already read Huxley books and 1989, intending to read the russian 'We' soon.
Yes, I'm aware of the chart in the files, but it's full of classics and old books. I'd prefer something more recent, the last 40-50 years at most.

for a rough idea of what i like, some of what i've read
>ASOIAF (loved it)
>all of First Law (loved the first trilogy and 2 of the 3 standalones, second trilogy dropped the ball, but was still fun)
>Bakker's first trilgoy (liked it, but didn't feel compelled to continue)

Unlike a lot of realism autists, the author talks about medieval society and warfare with a level of familiarity thats enjoyable to read. You can tell he didn't just read some articles.

The Claw of the Conciliator, The Book of the New Sun #2 - Gene Wolfe (1981)

The word choices were less intrusive for me this time, though that may have only been because of a coping mechanism to help me derive more enjoyment from their usage. I can't help but think that they serve the dual purpose of sincerity and prank in equal measure. The former is exactly what it seems to be, an exercise for the reader to learn new words and be in awe of Wolfe's command of language. The latter is that Severian is compensating due to what he's noted as being his lack of writing ability since he was never really taught that well. Severian may think that using obscure words makes his writing deep and mysterious enough to where it masks all other flaws. If the writing can't be easily understood, then that's a sure sign of quality. Wolfe isn't a pseudointellectual, but Severian may be. There's also a third group for whom it acts as a filter, which may not have been intentional. There's also questionable intent for the continued abuse of women, both by Severian and other characters, which may be a dealbreaker for various readers.

Now having finished this book I find it considerably more likely that much of this is intended to be farce, which is why I think the prose being at least somewhat a prank is likely. Severian continues to meander in a bumbling way and remains easily duped, but even so he more or less accomplishes his goals, though that's mostly due to the intervention of others. There's a chapter where he's entirely confused and terrified, and doesn't pretend that he isn't. He literally spends the next chapter explaining why he isn't a coward, or if he is it's because everyone is, and uses dreadful examples that only condemn him further. Is Severian the narrator still as oblivious to what what he writes as he was when he was experiencing it? It seems so. He doesn't seem to have much character growth throughout the series. There were quite a few times where I could only believe that the characters were humoring Severian because of some greater goal because there was such a disconnect between how Severian behaved towards them and how they reacted. Severian is loathsome with incidental acts of kindness, though I believe the latter is mostly out of curiosity than benevolence. Overall, I find this mostly to be amusing because I'm interpreting it much more as farce than anything serious. If I were to take Severian's proclamation that he wants to have sex with every woman he's ever met seriously rather than as a comedic outburst, I would probably be enjoying this considerably less.

There are two stories within the story in this book, which I didn't like and I thought they went on for far too long. Maybe they have a lot of hidden importance to the narrative, but I wasn't able to be as attentive to them, so if they do I probably missed whatever it may have been. I'm ok with that.

Yeah, the antechamber was an interesting form of an imposed society. When they had pastries to eat it made me think of "let them eat cake". I'm not sure what think of the present day interruptions that are included. My first thought about the black sails was Commodore Perry, but then I quickly realized that was wrong. After the story it basically says that's what it. There's probably also various metaphors about becoming too comfortable about treating what is meant to be imprisonment as a nice place because of how frightening the outside world is, despite the problems they face there. Maybe that's even what this site is.

I like it when you have a big, well-developed space-opera type setting with a Galactic empire or something like that, and Earth has been lost or forgotten, but there are still allusions to Earth and its history as if it were something out of mythology or primordial history, especially if rediscovering or returning to Earth becomes a major plot point. I had a dream about this once. Dune, Hyperion and especially Foundation have aspects of this, but I don't know much else.

Currently struggling over whether or not I want to convert my next science fiction novel into a visual novel when I'm done with it. There are a lot of infodumps, and the VN audience tends to be a lot more tolerant of infodumps. However, the story does not reflect much of anything within the current VN market (not like an anime, negligible romantic content, linear). Making it a VN would require a lot more work, but would also compensate for my main weakness in writing: describing environments and characters. I've made a VN before, and the revolution in AI-generated art should render the production of art assets significantly more efficient. I know VNs aren't that popular, but I probably have a greater chance of getting noticed if I commit to a niche market instead of trying to get coverage in the world of published books. Of course, VNs are on the whole a lower art form than literature. I don't feel compelled by that fact given that the current state of literature in the English-speaking world does not really approach "high art" most of the time either. I'm just stuck at a crossroads and wondering if any of you have experience or input that could help me decide what to do.

ringworld is fine to experience once, but it's not really well-written and its strengths are instead the ideas/sci-fi exploration. it has some pretty incongruous parts too as the whole setup with ringworld was trying to be very "hard sci-fi before that was a thing" so niven did a lot of research to make ringworld believable scientifically, but then shoves in a literal barbarella knockoff who is literally the luckiest being alive and can create "lucky" outcomes. Also has a bunch of psychic mind-reading mumbo-jumbo.

as a teen it was like 4.5/5 and then when i read it after i had been exposed to real life as an adult it fell to like 3/5, with 1 star being awarded for novelty/nostalgia.

>Severian does have growth throughout the story, the biggest spurt is probably in the first third of the next book, but not only.
I've now read what you're referring to and I disagree that that's character growth, but it's mostly a matter of semantics. Character growth to me is adaptive internal change that occurs due to the passage of time and events to where the character gains life experience through the choices that are made. I don't think that's what has happened here. Severian's change, which is substantial indeed, is mostly of external origin. Instead of growth it's more like superimposition. I didn't say there wasn't any growth at all. I'm also basing that from the beginning of the journey. Obviously he has both physical growth and maturation versus when he was a child.

>Most of what you type is total horseshit.
From the perspective of someone who has finished botns, and possibly the entire solar cycle, I can understand how you may think that. I can only write about what I've read so far. Especially in a series like this that's going to leave a lot to be desired. If you have specific complaints, then state them and I'll address them. All I can offer is my personal viewpoint. I don't see any sense in providing an objective summary. That can be gotten elsewhere. As I read more my opinion may change. If you think that nothing ought to be written at all until the entire series is read, then I think that's a valid argument, but it's clearly one I disagree with.

There was this pulp book I read, it must have been in middle school, where this plane full of high school kids gets abducted by aliens (I remember there was a girl who died from choking on vomit in zero g) and sends them to their planet for tests or some shit. The aliens choose a fat incel as a liason with extra privileges, and he takes the opportunity to take a girl as a sex slave. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

No, it is not a matter of semantics.

Severian throughout the first 2 whole books is non-stop talking about how he is a torturer (which is also related with all the talk about at which point he became a man). That's who he is, that's who everyone seems him as (outside of the Citadel Severian is seen as an almost mythical figure). Then in the second book, after reuniting with Dorcas, she gives this extremely important line about how "People don't want other people to be people."

In the beginning of the third book, Severian goes to a costume party, and while on the way there he has this line of thinking "Hey, imagine if the Conciliator came to this party [he did] and froze time. Everyone will be frozen into something they aren't [they are pretending to be something they aren't because of the costumes], but only I, Severian, will forever be what I truly am, a torturer [as he is in his torturer garb]".

Then a few hours later he goes down the same steps he had the above thought, saying how not only he is not a torturer but also that he never really he was one. And then during his escape, even though it's dangerous for him, he goes back to the hut with the sick children, even though previously he didn't do anything to them.

This all is symbolically extremely important for Severian as a character. It's not a matter of neither semantics nor is it something that is minor. In the 4th book we get even more details why this journey from the torturer to the Conciliator is so important as well. It is absolutely necessary that it happened before all the later events. For the New Sun and everything else.

You are a complete brainlet.

Yes, I agree with everything you've stated. It's a matter of why that I disagree with. After Severian eats Thecla he becomes every increasingly more her and less himself. He states multiple time that her personality is increasingly taking over. That's why he changes so much as you noted in the third book and before that as well. I don't consider that character growth. If you do, that's your decision. Also, Severian really doesn't take what Dorcas says seriously, he even says so.

That's one interpretation of why he helps the children. I saw it as more as a controlled experiment to test the claw's powers to prove to himself that it does what he think it does. He states at the time that before then he never truly believed in its powers. I don't think he does it out of kindness at that point. It's still self-interest.

>> No.21281508

>>21281479
He doesn't change because of the alzabo analeptic. His transformation began before then, remember for example he spared Agia before meeting Vodalus.

The view that after the analeptic Severian is a completely different character is on multiple occasions disproven by the book, the most strongly nearing the end of book 4. He is as much himself as at any time before that, only sometimes Thecla's memories push to the to the fore. He still has one personality, only with Thecla's memories afterwards. Not a new personality emerging from the analeptic a la Major from GitS, and not two personalities - one influencing and changing the other.

You have a misconception regarding what is happening with Thecla's memories and how the analeptic works. Read the rest of book 3 and book 4.

Not worth unless you're super invested in 40k lore. The good books are disconnected from one another and require background knowledge to enjoy.

For example the only book in the Horus Heresy worth reading is book #41. So either you can read through dogshit to get to it, skip all the proceeding books and fill the gaps with lore knowledge, or just avoid the series altogether. The best 40k I've ever read has been from Chris Wraight and Mike Brooks

>when Thecla had for a time displaced my own personality.

Then there's the part, which I can't find at the moment, where he talks about how it literally changed his brain in a physical manner. It's not just memories. There's a lot where he states he's less himself. No doubt he's going to take in many more people later and become far less who he was until the Severian that started with is just a tiny part of the personality matrix.

I never said anything about it making him more humane. I don't think it does at all.

>> No.21281564

>>21281547
Read the rest of the books.

On multiple occasions what Severian is saying is not what actually is happening (like with the party, or his response to Dorcas about "People,,,").

Even if you go for a symbolic reading of the book, nothing makes sense it terms of meaning if you take on board what you have said.

The whole point of the book is that Severian and his journey, not the Thecla memories or the rest of the Autarchs' - is the key to the New Sun.

From interviews with Wolfe is also obvious this is what he had in mind. The alzabo part is important, but not for changing the core of Severian like you imply. It has a completely different function in the book, both plot wise and meaning wise.
