For what it's worth, I've never read a self-help book (except for As a Man Thinketh which my grandfather gifted to me as a teen, or unless you count Meditations as one then that too) but I can still recognize that despite me not needing them, there are plenty of people out there who do need guidance towards better behavior/mindsets.

I think its mostly that his fans were really annoying for a while. i think because he sold his self help advice under the guise of a sort of pseudo-profound Jungian sauce people felt like his advice was a fully fledged philosophy, able to critique and stand on equal footing with other philosophical works. No one had ever explained to me these basic, fundamental facts about human nature. Self help is bad. People learn best from others. Fiction - good fiction - allows you to live through the lens of another person. Empathy is a great trait to have, and understanding that others exist in the same way that you do is a great way not to be an asshole.

You shouldn't need a self help book to tell you to be positive either. And you shouldn't be positive all the time. You can tell when you meet a person that they read self help and mindfulness tripe, because they are almost always insufferable and fake.

The author stepped out of line, he promoted views that went against what was being pushed by Academia and the mainstream media. They weren't bad ideas, in fact they where what most people thought, but the general public hadn't been fully conditioned so instead they made an example out of him. So by extension, his work is now tainted by association with an Author who was made a hate figure.

Now some social rejects may try and claim otherwise, despite the very fact we use this shit hole of a site anonymously because we ourselves fear the repercusions of our views being made public.

The man's the modern version of Ayn Rand. Nothing either of them has published is particularly good or bad. 12 Rules is better than average (for self help) but not spectacular. They'd both probably gather a small cult following in a sane world.
However, they make a bunch of widely-disliked histrionic losers go apeshit and attack them, so they get a ton of interest from people who dislike those losers. Some of those people claim it's the best shit since sliced bread because they want to hold the furthest position possible from these people.
It's basically an inverted version of the TLOU2 controversy. Everyone quietly acknowledges that it wasn't amazing, but because /pol/tards hated it, a lot of other people loudly proclaimed it to be GOTY.
