19936087 No.19936087 [Reply] [Original]

I've always kinda wondered how Nic felt about Infinite Jest, given his well-recorded passion for postmodernism and penchant for the slightly janky. Well, our day is at hand. Yesterday, Nic posted a really thorough review of Infinite Jest:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f6uJStwwgo

He really dunks on both it and David Foster Wallace in general. I think the funniest part is where he compares it to "My Custom Van" by Michael Ian Black. I think that comparison is actually kind of apt. What do you think? This review is fantastic

Nic is edgy? I dunno if I would label him as being particularly "edgy". I do know he's written 2 novels and some kind of science-fiction anthology, but as far as I know none of them are that edgy. They're just kind of postmodern

I definitely rust whatever Nic has to say about the postmodern genre, he's done as much for postmodern literature in the 2010s as Thomas Pynchon did in the 60s. He's clearly talking from experience in this, I like that

in the bottom right hand corner of the screen there is a reply counter and a poster counter (the reply counter doesn't include OP)
that means we can see who is an original poster in this thread.
since you (OP) this anon >>19936104, and now me have posted, and the poster count is now three it's IMMEDIATELY OBVIOUS that the other posts are you, such as >>19936176 and >>19936181 and >>19936184

Jeez, talk about taking the piss out of someone. Nic talks about this book like David Foster isn't dead. That's the classic Nic cynicism at work. I think that's what attracts a lot of people to his reviews, he doesn't let up with that really heavy, hard-hitting criticism. Fucking savage!

For what it's worth, I liked Sequeira's 2019 debut, "Nightlife." It was a little bare-bones compared to its successor, but it did have a lot of interesting themes to go off. Joe's night shift at the gas station, for instance, is an angle I don't see explored much in books these days, and it offers a pretty cool window into that kind of lifestyle. It's a nice breezy read and I would recommend it for anyone who's looking to get into postmodern fiction. The bit with the cab driver is also great. Oh, and the scene with the trolley problem. I always like Nic when he dumps on these pseudointellectual phrases like a complete and total BAWSE

Nic definitely understands Wallace's style quite a bit. In particular how he analyses Wallace's psyche while producing the work. I heard somewhere that Nic doesn't buy into The Death of The Author, and that helps him maintain a lot of perspective while reviewing these books, thinking about how the author's own experience influences the end product. David Foster did play a lot of tennis, from what I've heard

Would you say David Foster Wallace IS a Pynchon? Not only is Wallace's work comparatively not as good, they don't even look that much like each other. I wouldn't say you could get much more different between two authors

>> No.19938924

>>19938916
You can tell from just this one picture what a narcissist Wallace is, he's trying to give off fuckboi vibes here. This is the main difference between him and a real writer like Pynchon, who noticeably has never made a public appearance and lives in an undisclosed location, and doesn't constantly take photos of himself in a bandana and John Lennon glasses to overcompensate for the fact that he's boring, given that he's probably one of the coolest people alive, but chooses to let his novels stand completely on their own out of modesty

>> No.19938927

I think Nic was trying to be nice to Foster Wallace. I've seen reviews where he just totally shits on something, absolutely obliterates it. He's actually kind of reserved in this one, which is weird to see
