Is this true, /lit/? Nge stands, of course, for the anime masterpiece neon genesis evangelion.

4channelers don't like popular things.
Even if they're good things.
It's a common knowledge.
Also Celine becoming sort of popular rn so /lit/ will hate him too eventually.

That post is so out of touch with reality it's painful. Watching oriental cartoons genuinely makes you slow as a person. Whenever these gaynime types posts, the lack of coherency and the abundance of completely nonsensical thinking is always present.

The themes of nge would still be present though. What would change is merely the setting and the lack of visual and audio qualities, which are what makes /lit/ seethe since it's an anime

nge is superficial jap crap for teenagers. this is not a joke, anno specifically put in references to religion, philosophy, and psychoanalysis solely to make a point about teenagers being pretentious twats who won't grow up and obsessively nazel gaze. the fact actual adults are analyzing such themes in the first place is proof of anno's complete failure as an artist.

Them being presented in another context would competely change their reception. /lit/ keeps posting about how nge is "pretentious" and "fake-deep" but that's only because it's le japanese cartoon, they never present an actual critique of nge's themes

No, because NGE is incredibly juvenile, servile and cursory. It's method of storytelling is for dumb-dumbs who can't into subtext, the characters are very shallow, the story is nonsensical and made up mostly of filler and the fact it doesn't resonate with anyone above 20 should be a discouraging fact to most people.

Just compare it genuinely good Japanese animated films like Millenium Actress or Wind Rises, it's just pathetic in comparison.

This. Plus the only thing worse than NGE fanboys are NGE haters, your coping is somehow even more severe. In the context of 90s anime and to whom it was intended for, it's a good postmodern series with universal themes. Manage your expectations and don't just mindlessly hate it because you don't like the medium. Fine if you think there's better anime out there though.

Lit hates french novels.

Conversely, if any classic novels were dumbed down, MC turned into a effeminate 19 year old with tousled hair and all the other characters were turned into women that all wanted to have some sort of romantic relations with the MC, /a/ would masturbate all over that

No shit if you consider that NGE's themes would be elaborated, expounded and discussed in much greater depth by a poor underdog who went through WW1 than some fagime director who enjoyed Japan's economic prosperity in the late 20th-cent and still thrives on his series' brand name.

So yeah. Context hugely matters to make /lit/ like or hate a work regardless of its inherent quality.
