Turkey is one of the great European nations but I have very little knowledge of their literary tradition. What are the great works of Turkish lit?

Turks don't have an equivalent of so central a figure like Shakespeare in Turkish literary system.

It's not individualistic like one guy around which other literary canon is grouped. No central figure.

The closest I can think of is Yunus Emre (not really) but that's the closest you could get.

Very limited drama (almost non existent) and quite young novel tradition. So it lacks such central figures.

The Turks, like the Russians, have always lived in the cultural shadow of their neighbours of Europe and Persia. As such any attempt at culture from their part was doomed from the start to be nothing more than an ersatz of the product of a bigger culture mixed with a few idiosyncrasies in order to have some local taste. Russia could break the spell thanks to the USSR when it did produce some truly original artists such as Eisenstein, Tarkovsky or Kalatozov. The artists who came before are mostly trying to be profoundly European and as such are not very interesting (Stravinsky, Tolstoi, Dostosomething). The icons and the churches are the only true Russian art. Unfortunately the Turks didn't even have that because their mosques are uninteresting when they're not reconverted churches. Go to any Turk city and you'll see that these people cannot possibly make good art. Russians only had the influence from Europe, which allowed them to still do some good things while the Turks were (and still are) torn between Europe, the legacy of the Byzantine empire, Persia, India and Ethiopia.

Book of Dede Korkut for epic heritage

for folk poetry
Yunus Emre (as stated above)

For travel/history (think Herodotus)

I don't have much info on that (cuz it's quite hard to comprehend these texts with cont. turkish language)

for early modern prose
Yakup Kadri, namık Kemal

for republican prose
ahmet hamdi tanpınar, oğuz atay, orhan pamuk, yaşar kemal

for republican poetry
mehmet akif ersoy, nazım hikmet ran, necip fazıl kısakürek, orhan veli, sezai karakoç, cahit külebi,

I dunno. I resolved to study Turkish lately because I grew concerned that I was getting an overly heated view of Muslims in the wake of recent events. My thinking was that by studying and learning a language used in a Muslim nation, I would be less susceptible to hateful thoughts. Arabic looked too complex, so I chose Turkish.

What's wrong with the Turks? I grew up next to a Turkish family and though quiet and slow to get to know they were very pleasant people; also played club soccer with a Turkish dude in grad (he was at the Med school) and though aloof he was a solid player with a good sense of humor. Also a buddy of mine was a Corpbot in Bulgaria for two years and visited Istanbul twice, which he called the coolest city in the world. He said Bulgarians and Greeks could screech all they wanted about the Turks but they were in fact among the sweetest most helpful people he had met when in Europe. So, what gives?

After reading them you are now ready for the good stuff. Try your first Turkish modernist novels, go with Ahmed Hamdi Tanpınar and Oguz Atay. You will probably take your time with Atay and also no better writer came after him so my recs end here.
