I'll start.

The Lotus War Trilogy by Jay Kristoff. These books have it all!

A Hellish Steampunk Setting, Grimdark Empires & Oppressive Religious Regimes, Weaboo Shit Off-The-Chars, Misinterpretation of Japanese Culture and Mythology, Chainsaw Katana, Genetically-Enhanced Cyborg Samurai, Lotus Flower-Powered Airships, and Talking Flying Thunder Tigers.

Do read. It's fun. Just don't expect to see any depiction of Japanese Culture / History that's remotely accurate.

I think the word you're looking for is "pulp". Or, alternatively, "Fast Food Literature".

The fact of the matter is that, though I enjoy a fine dinner at a fancy restaurant as much the other guy, sometimes I just want to eat a borger. Or an ice cream sundae. Or a crepe or whatever.

Something that's quick, easily digestible, and which overall doesn't enrich me in the slightest and in fact can actually do harm if it's all I eat, but which is undeniably tasty for what it is and enjoyable in the moment.

To me, it's the same with literature. I enjoy Isaac Azimov and Arthur C. Clark as much as the next nerd, but sometimes I just wanna read the equivalent of Flash Gordon serials.

Or to use a more apt, weeb analogy, not everything needs to be Miyazaki, sometimes seeing dumb action and cute waifus is enough.

There's usually an isekai "general" on /a/ that discusses web novels, and it's almost always alive, so if enough people know about it maybe.
But I don't think any board would willingly accept it. /a/ jannies kick it because they discuss korean and chinese novels, /lit/ might kick them for not being /lit/ enough or something, and /jp/ would kick it for the same reason /a/ would.
There's also some web novel posting in the /a/ homo threads and on /y/ and /cm/, but that's obviously limited to bl novels.

I do think it would be nice to have a thread like that. The subreddit for xianxia novels died after Qidian started locking the majority of the novels behind a paywall.

You should start with Coiling Dragon, then Desolate Era, and then Renegade Immortal.
The last one isn't finished yet but will be in a month. And the first two are like 5000+ pages combined anyway so I doubt you'll be done with them before.
CD is a good start because it's western fantasy, and while its story progression is xianxia themed it's not that deep. Then DE is chinese styled fantasy with a xianxia story progression, but again it's not that bad. And then you have RI which is chinese fantasy with a complete xianxia story progression.
In the first two the MC is righteous and just, always on the side of good, at least what qualifies as good in xianxia. And in RI the mc serves only himself, and occasionally allies who are good to him. Which is the ideal xianxia character type.
It's done even better in Reverend Insanity but that's not finished yet. And the ending got censored by the chinese government so it might never be finished.

There's another web novel called Lord of the Mysteries which is also very good, and quite popular on /a/ and while that didn't get completely blocked the author has to change a certain event that happens.

Basically china has these rules against magic and undead, and both of these have that, as well as usually have ascending to become a god at some point, and maybe that's what triggered the censors.

Try reading Dungeon Lord by Hugo Huesca. Its fantastic in my opinion. You can also try the Bathrobe Knight by James Dean. They focus on story and are competently written. No harems.

A lot of people dislike the harem elements that are commonly associated with the litrpg genre. You might also want to look into "gamelit". Which is basically the same as litrpg but without the constant stats and levelups. Try The Blue Mage Raised By Dragons by VIrlyce its a good example of a toned down version that is still game like but isnt made up of spreadsheets.
Finally theres the "good" harem writers. At the top of the pole are William D. Arand/Randi Darren(Same person), Daniel Schinhofen and Michael-Scott Earle. They are considered the top dogs in the genre because they actually are competent writers that focus on stories and incorporate the harem elements in a way that makes sense. They were the first to do(and gain mainstream popularity with it) it and as far as i can tell no one comes close in talent and quality to those three when it comes to harems in stories.
Keep in mind though many people dislike the harem stuff on a principal level and i have to admit I've grown tired of it from many authors as well. That being said it seems to be just a fad for many. Harmon Cooper for example released a non harem book called Death's Mantle which also would fall under the game lite umbrella.

Authors grow over time and change their writing style and perspective. I don't hold the earliest works of an author against them if they actually improve.
In the case of Schinhofen for example Alpha World is his weakest entry by far. He improved drastically in my opinion with Morrigan's Bidding and while i agree that he has an issue with his characters manning up, his shtick is character- and most importantly self-development so i can forgive him that characters occasionally act stupid as long as they actually improve upon themselves.. Harmon cooper served to illustrate a point that he actually did more than just write harems. I will grant you that Cooper is not the best of authors in regards to consistency. However i will defend Hugo Huesca and James Dean. The stories they write are great. The Wraiths Hunt has been a fresh air in the genre and each books is actually better than the previous one. I recommended the Bathrobe knight though because it hits most of the fantasy check-marks while not being overly "litrpgy" despite taking place in a video-game and featuring stats. The Heroic Villain is also something i'm enjoying a great deal.

The first book of morrigan's bidding was alpha world, but not in a game scenario. It was the same characters, and the same "my father thought me to love one woman" bs. Then the second book went completely off the rails and just turned into orgy training, I was surprised they didn't do a Shakespeare play to make more filler. The third book got back on track and cut to black, but the james masturbation (or whatever his friend's name is) is still there, more than ever. You just know (from his poor foreshadowing) that James will turn up later in the books. Also, the author tries to set up situations where he can add women to his harem and it wouldn't compromise his morals such as him bringing two girls back from the dead, having them bonded to him, allowing for him not actually cheating on metal arm knife ears also, which female would willingly want to share their bed with another female? Not only that, but look for more females to add to it, thus lessening the time they can spend with dick?

I dropped alpha world after they did an entire filler book hand holding fluff, and pages upon pages of Shakespeare plays. Fuck that shit.

Okay, I could do this. I need some advice, mainly how important is the cover art and how much should I expect to invest in a commission for it, and secondly what kind of self-promotion would I need to engage in to get word of my works out there (apart from shilling on /lit/)?

I ask the second question because this Jamie Hawke guy, who appears to be the leader in this genre, has a comics background so he obviously had contacts. Enough to push his shit to the forefront in under 2 years. Is it pointless to try and make money from this genre without being able to afford artists, and audiobook recordings of my works?

The whole Wheel of Time series got released in Japan, albeit with each book split into like 2 or 3 volumes.

And yes, all the volumes have inner illustrations of characters and scenes. Though obviously there's no good quality scans or even pictures of them save that one Imgur Gallery of Volume One.

I don't think the story got changed save for the title. I mean, Wheel of Time is already really fucking Light Novel material as is. With an unassuming nobody protagonist that ends up turning out to be the most important guy in the universe, who becomes increasingly stronger until he's the most powerful guy in the universe short of fucking god, and who gets his own harem of three beauties who all happily share him.

I'm shocked it's not bigger in Japan

I'm working on a novel that will kick off a series. Attached image is a dummy cover I mocked up to motivate myself. The actual title will also be different, but it's basically darker, edgier, sexier Star Wars. The major differences are:
>The "Jedi" work for the "Empire."
>The "Sith" lead the "Rebel Alliance."
Neither side is really the good guy or bad guy, and the protagonist is an intergalactic thief who gets caught up in the fight between the two factions and finds himself in a position to tilt the balance. There's a little bit of existentialism and discussion of choice and identity, but mostly it's about this wicked smart dude kicking the ass of various psychic demigods who constantly mistake him for a meaningless pawn in their game. And he fucks hot Jedi bitches.

Yeah, that's the hardest trick. I'm also borrowing a lot of ideas from Warhammer 40k so that it's not too Star Warsy, and the goal is kind of "Starhammer." The art is some random chick cosplaying as a Sith. Its more inspirational than anything else, like a feel of what you'll get. Namely, sexy goth chicks who can kill you with their brains and laser sword battles.

Eventually I'll commission some art, and the swords will look more like pic attached, and they won't be color coded for your convenience. They're all red to white, depending on the power level of the wielder (another major difference from lightsabers, which don't vary in damage potential).

You want a sample? I'll give you a sample! In this scene, the protagonist Devo has been rescued by Grendel Starwise and brought aboard Grendel's ship, the Imperator, and asked for a fresh of clothes.

>Tearing open the package, Devo found a sleeveless yellow jumpsuit, underwear, socks and a pair of black boots. A wrist chronometer, a red web belt, and a strange multi-tiered hat made of hard plastic, also red, that fastened to the head by means of a chin strap completed the outfit.
>Yellow wasn't his favor color, nor jumpsuits his style, but it was still a better option for exploring the ship than a towel. Except for the hat, which was absurd. Devo pulled it off and whipped it into a waste receptacle with a satisfying crash.

Zoomers will not get the joke.

Here's a real sample:

The security station was really more of wide than usual section of hallway than an actual room. Weapon lockers lined one long section of wall, across from them were four emergency turbolifts that would speed crewman to the escape pods. In the middle of the four lift entrances was an alcove lined with security monitors. A curved podium covered in controls stood before the alove, and behind the podium stood a young man in the white and black uniform of the Galactic Commonwealth. The flair on his jacket identified him as Junior Ensign Foxe.

Devo smiled at the young man, giving him a friendly nod of the head, then head straight for one of the weapon lockers, trying the door. Naturally it was locked.

“Excuse me, sir?” asked the Junior Ensign. “What are you doing?”

Devo gave him his best innocent look. “I was grabbing a gun.”

Foxe's mouth gaped like a fish, nonplussed by Devo's honesty. After an embarrassingly long moment, he found his words again.

“Sir, you can't just take a gun.”

“But I need a gun,” Devo explained, walking over to the podium. “You see, I'm unarmed. I'm practically naked.”

“Only authorized personal can carry sidearms,” Foxe protested weakly.

“What if someone attacks me? How will I defend myself?”

“You're on a Commonwealth destroyer, sir,” Foxe said nervously, clearly confused. “You're perfectly safe, and not, you're not authorized. Sir.”

“Oh, I'm authorized. Master Starwise authorized me,” Devo said, stepping around the podium and reaching for the secure access terminal. “Look me up.”

“Sir, please, you can't touch that,” Foxe said, shooing Devo's hand away. Foxe put his hand on a scanner, which flashed with green light, and the access terminal screen changed to show a menu of options. Foxe punched in a series of commands, bringing up a submenu. “What's your name?”

“Devo Serif,” Devo said, smiling. He clapped the young man on the back, noting that they were about the same size. “My friends call me Devo.”

Devo's face appeared on the screen, an old photo from before his time on Güngalor, when he still looked healthy. The Junior Ensign began reading Devo's file, while Devo surreptitiously checked the hall to make sure he had no witnesses, slidding his hand from Foxe's shoulder to the nape of his neck

“Sir, this says you're supposed to be confined to your-”

The ensign's head bounced off the security podium with a loud thwack. The young man crumpled instantly, slumping to the ground behind podium as Devo went to work. With access to a security terminal, Devo had access to most of the ship's information systems.

Well, they're on board a star destroyer sized warship. Internal security is pretty light because there shouldn't be anyone on board who isn't supposed to be on board, and this security station isn't really meant to provide internal security -- its a rally point in case the ship is boarded, where crew can arm up and scan the decks for intruders. (All of which is explained before this scene.)

That's the whole reason Foxe is so confused by Devo's approach -- rando civilians walking up to take guns out of the weapons locker is just not something that's supposed to happen.

Should I make that more clear? I'm always worried about overwriting scenes, but sometimes that leads me to underwriting them.

What almost every protagonist follows is repay kindness with kindness and enmity with enmity. And family isn't really that big a deal mostly because rarely does the mc even have a family. Usually it's more about his friends and allies and his harem if he has one.
So if you're nice to the protagonist he'll treat you well, and usually repay all his debts many times over.
If you piss him off, it'll end up with your entire extended family dying.

The problem is the writing which usually sucks. Good characters will be forgotten about eventually when the protagonist outranks them in strength, or worse they'll just come back to cause drama by getting captured or killed.
On the other hand the enemies/young masters are usually motivated by vanity and pride. Like in one case the mc comes to the equivalent of the adventurer's guild to take their test and aces it, the vain young master is triggered by because he's not used to being second best and tries to get him killed.
And then it ends up with him dying, and all of young master's wealth becomes the mc's wealth. And then the young master's parents come after him too, and then the clan behind the parents, and then the super clan behind the clan, and so on and all of their wealth goes into the mc's pocket as well.
This is very common, and it's usually just used to give the mc a righteous explanation to go around killing and stealing to become stronger.
In better novels the mc acts like a prick on purpose to rile people up and attract big fishes so he can have justification to kill them. But most novels don't even bother with that.

Xianxia is so close to being really fucking hype to read if you love stories with fighting and growing stronger to fight even more. But bad writing fucks over the vast majority of the novels. It's so sad.
And all the advantages of the world building are rarely used to their greatest potential, or even completely forgotten about to cause drama.
I love xianxia anyway though.

I mean, what's there to actually discuss here aside from recommendations?
At best, it's a young genre where there hasn't been time for classics to even form. What hidden gems may exist haven't had time to propagate. At worse, and likely at present, it's a genre that seems to strive to be all the things that literature ain't, where the works are devoid of themes that might distract from the cheaper thrills and the language strives to keep itself as simple as it can be so that it doesn't go over any heads.

I don't know if a rebranding to general independently published fiction would save things by inviting in Worm fans or whatever, but it doesn't seem like this place ever had long to live. Maybe some OP template would help it, a book of the week or whatever, but I wouldn't hedge bets on this making another thread.
