I bought the First Law trilogy on an impulse. Was it a good choice? What am I in for /lit/? I hear that the characters are absolutely fantastic but the world a bit boring.

I only read parts of the first book, but it seemed a bit too grimdark for me. All I remember is the cripples master torturer and the visit of some kind of warlord from elsewhere whose culture and motives were understood. Or something like that.

This, the trilogy itself is a decent experience and definitely worthwhile. Abercrombies writing style just gets extremely jarring after awhile but 3 books should be tolerable.

Give it some time. It’s actually one of the better fantasy series I’ve read in a while. The trilogy and the 3 “stand alone” novels are quite good. The heroes is fantastic. He’s going to be releasing another trilogy taking place 20-30 years in the future of the setting with a industrial revolution occurring so anon read and push through the weakest book of the first book and once you get to book 2 it really hits its stride.
