11738076 No.11738076 [Reply] [Original]

I'm writing an anime-style novel right now, but I can't think of any new and interesting ways to do battle.

For example, here are some ways to do battle:

>hand-to-hand combat
Don't enjoy this

>medieval weapons
Overplayed

>laser rifles
Star Wars has a monopoly already

>world-relevant battle format
An example would be Pokemon, where rivals all agree to fight via their Pokemons. Beyblade is another example.

>wands
Harry Potter has a monopoly

>some kind of robotic avatar
Neon Genesis Evangelion has a monopoly already

I'm stumped, honestly. I want a form of fighting in which male and female can fight without relying on their muscles alone (which is why Pokemon and Harry Potter are so great). But I can't think of anything really. Nothing animal-related can be involved since it'll just be a more realistic Pokemon.

Any ideas?

It's not a light novel, it deals with profound intellectual and philosophical themes, only in the context of a novel which is anime-esque.

Thanks.

You're focusing on the wrong thing m8. Battles are the least interesting part of novels. What matters more is the reason behind the battles, not how they're waged.

If you really care about the minutiae of battles, then choose a more dynamic medium like animation or vidya.

But surely that was true in 1995 or whatever when Neon Genesis Evangelion came out with a totally new battle concept?

And even Harry Potter totally revolutionized the idea of wand combat, since wands before then had largely been associated with causing a cauldron to boil and mundane shit like that.

They are crucial to my work, because the protagonist battles against dark forces alongside a female co-protagonist, but I don't want there to be physical fighting involved (melee, swords etc) since it's just too old-fashioned IMO.

What aspect of NGE's combat was new? Harry Potter's wand combat was slightly innovative but magic has been done so so so much.

NGE was new in that rather than a male kid and a female kid being forced to punch or stab a monster, they instead were placed in giant robots they controlled to fight them. A novel concept.

And magic has been done a lot, but never as thoroughly as in Harry Potter, where wand fighting is taken to a whole nother level.

I don't want to use firearms, they are unaesthetic. You'd never see conventional firearms in an anime, except in the form of parody. No cute, autistic anime protagonist would wield a pistol or rifle, unless it fired lasers.

Conventional firearms show up in anime all the time and look great. Watch Full Metal Panic, Gunsmith Cats, and Cowboy Bebop. Even Trigun and Hellsing, while being more stylized and over the top, had technically conventional firearms.

Oh I am laffin
It's a combination of two fight styles you have said you do not want to do; hand-to-hand and rifles, overlain with how said battles affect each character's psyche.
Just describe what's happening during the battle that's relevant. As long as it's not a Dragon Ball Z-tier fight that lasts over a chapter nobody is going to mind the action.
