Yeah, it's quite an eerie and gothic tale.

It has more romanticism than romance, with ghosts and several people romantically dying every second. The love in the novel is portrayed as self-destructive. It also has a little-implied racism throughout the novel, with Heathcliff coming from a port-town and being described as "gypsy-looking". It is set in Yorkshire, so people talk and act grimly there as well.
