Don't read the Baroque Cycle. It's nothing like his other stuff. Just move on from Stephenson.

Altered Carbon. I think you might love it.

Anathem is way better than Snow Crash; it's the only good book Stephenson has written, even with its flaws.

>> No.996778

I loved Necromonicon. Baroque Cycle gave me hives, although I plowed thru the whole thing. He really varies in his style.

Anathem was pretty good.

How did Baroque Cycle give you hives?

Snow Crash is half a good book, at least. Stephenson's problem was that he decided that 200 pages of in-depth explanations that nobody cared about delivered in a half-assed style in the text was a good thing to have. There was SO MUCH useless exposition by that stupid library program that was only in the story to GIVE useless exposition, and Hiro's former GF was almost as bad.

Stephenson basically forgot that it's show, don't tell, even in literature, so we ended up with half the book being someone just telling us crap with no action or even real influence on the plot.

I LOVED the baroque cycle but it is very different. I personally found Snow Crash to be Stephenson's worst.
If you have read cryptonomicon I cannot suggest the Baroque cycle enough because it is a prequel to it.
Almost every single character in Cryptonomicon can be traced back to a character in the Cycle. No matter how minute.

welcome to Neal Stephenson.

>> No.997197

>>997180
What does that even mean?

Unless you're saying that every book he writes used the same methods Snow Crash did, in which case maybe you should read some of his better stuff so you don't come across as clueless.

it means that in every Stephenson book i've read (Baroque Cycle, Snow Crash, Cryptonomicon, in order of most to least enjoyable, although i liked them all) he does "useless exposition" like he's getting paid for it. Which i guess he is.

But if you don't like the subject he's talking about, you're not going to enjoy the book. If i didn't like science and history and economics i would have fucking hated the Baroque Cycle, and if i didn't find language motherfucking fascinating i'd feel the same way as that guy about Snow Crash.

but, y'know, stay defensive bro.

>> No.997251

Well that's sort of the point of it. It's an epic story that you learn at least, half truth history, philosophy and mathematics while reading a pretty stellar story.

>> No.997531

>>997239
I will stay defensive, yes. The alternative is to agree with you, which I don't.

Liking the material has nothing to do with disliking how he presented it in Snow Crash. All the info was interesting, but it didn't help the plot at all NOR was it presented in an interesting way. When you have to invent a character solely to perform exposition, you've failed at your job as a writer to make interesting characters that seem alive.

Still, we can agree to disagree I suppose, enjoy what you like for the reasons you have and I'll do the same, right? Let's be friends.

>Snow Crash, worst
No, the one where the robotic presidential candidate kills himself to stop a cartel of capitalists because he's really just a hometown boy is the worst.

I loved this book. Snow Crash wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, and the ending was just thrown in.
