This isn't nearly.as good as I thought it would be
Is it just the Fagles translation or is it that hard to compete with KJV prose?

If you want KJV prose, read stuff from the 1600s. Translations of Homer from then should suffice, although they won't necessarily be word-for-word accurate with Homer.
