What do you think of Stephen King?

We have this thread all the time. The general consensus seems to be "He's not very good, but some of us like him as mindless entertainment."

I've only ever read the Dark Tower series and the Dark Half. I thought Dark Half was meh. I loved the first 4 books of tower, thought the last 3 were boring garbage. I have IT, the Shining, and Pet Semetary on the way, if I don't like them I'll probably be done with King.

His concepts and ideas in the 70s and 80s, along with crippling drug use, created some fantastic stories. The first Gunslinger, IT, The Shining, and Different Seasons in particular are very good.

His writing is bottom tier, much of it are long streams of dialogue where every person gets their own line, and the descriptory passages are usually told in the third person, very badly.

He's a good storyteller, which is the reason of his success in the first place, but his characters and plots are comic book tier.

The old covers to his books were actually better than the books themselves

Considered buying 22-11-63 a few weeks ago and didn't. Anyone read that?

I've read IT, The Stand, Misery and few minor ones. Liked them but, as the others said, it's mindless entertainment. Worth it as something to read in summer.

Good writer, why else do they make movies out of it iff it is shit?

Good author, just too popular/mainstream to be well-liked on /lit/.

>> No.9911536

Some of the stuff he's written is very good, IT, shawshank and a lot of short stories, etc.

Most of his stuff is complete garbage.

103 (i am copying and pasting this post from now on and simple changing the counter at the end of it every time I post it).

What do you think of Harold Robbins?

Hit-or-miss. His early stuff is a little better. Some of his better later stuff includes Lisey's Story and Duma Key. The first four Dark Tower books are terrific, the last three of the main series terrible. Wind Through the Keyhole is okay. Avoid Dreamcatcher and Tommyknockers.

Kevin McDonald says that Stephen King is a Jew so he's bad. Jews are bad, folks. Kevin McDonald taught me that.

He's not highly-rated by people who read literature because he's not a very good writer. It has very little do with sales.
