Jorge Luis Borges. I've heard 'The Circular Ruins' is decent, and I plan on reading it. Your opinions on this work, and the author in general? I have never read any of his works before.

he's alright

All I know is that Nabokov references him in Ada, making his Antiterran counterpart the author of the Antiterran Lolita (his name in Ada is an anagram, of course, of his actual name-- Nabokov loved being tricky like that).

Anyway, Nabokov supposedly did this because he and Borges had been rather superficially compared by some reviewers or something, and Nabokov didn't really think he was that similar, so he wanted to call to attention how ludicrous the comparison really was.

Shame that you have to read a translated version of it.

Borges in spanish is godly.

Borges is excellent... one of the all-time great short story writers. Pick up The Collected Fictions and dive in.

If you like Borges, I also recommend Blow-Up and Other Stories by Cortazar.

Borges- accept no substitutes

Yeess he's good. Poetic and symbolic as a translation can be his short stories (those i've read) left me requiring more. Although I had just one book (some collected stories) I plan on reading more of his work and that's a nice compliment for any author.

Collected Fictions, his entire literary output, is available for less than 25 bucks.

Not even close. He wrote a lot of poetry and A FUCKTON of non-fiction. We're talking something like 1.5k pieces.
