What works of Aristotle are essential to understand Aquinas?

Perfect, thanks

I don't see anything as being essential.
If you're looking for theological answers they're easy to find.
imo you need to be more familiar with the bible than anything else.

I got the 'Selected Writings' and they're more focused on his philosophy than theology (which kind of disappointed me cause I'm really interested in theology). But I started reading his treatise on 'Angelic Knowledge' and I'll admit I felt pretty lost, and Aristotle was mentioned like three times on the first page alone

Aristotle to Aquinas, just like Plato to Agostinho, right?

But do I need theological background?

Unless you're a savant, you probably do. He can be pretty abstruse. There are several Aquinas for beginners type books. I'm not sure which is best. I've heard Kreeft's A Summa of the Summa is good, but I can't personally vouch for it not having read it.

Categories, Analytics, Metaphysics, Politics, Nichomacian Ethics.
t. Read more Aquinas than anyone on this awful board.
Books that will help you understand Aquinas: Beginner's Guide by Edward Feser, After Virtue and Whose Justice Which Rationality by Alsadair MacIntyre, Reality: A Synthesis, God His Existence and His Nature by Garrigou-Lagrange.
