hey /lit/ I'm going to school for professional writing
>read journalism
anyways, I'm gonna be writing a TON of stuff and probably submitting it here and there. Anyways, can you throw up some suggestions of stuff I should read. I have a lot of ebooks, any pdf's you upload would be REALLY APPRECIATED. I'm trying to find some stuff that's a little weird. Thanks a lot anon

If you're doing journalism, you don't really need to read much. That stuff is purposely written at like an eighth grade level.

Also, the game.

what anon said. Look up the inverted pyramid and you're good.

In school they teach you history and copy editing mainly. If you writing sucks, they just say stop writing sucky stuff. That's it really. So read whatever you think is an interesting style of writing and teach yourself how to apply that to writing that is supposed to be more newsy.

Not OP here, but you've obviously never taken a journalism class. You sound like the typical pretentious ass who always turns me away from /lit/.

There is a lot more to it than "writing simple prose."

An 8th grader can not write with the clarity and conciseness that a good journalist can.

Study history, pop culture, and political theory.

No. Not at all.

> If you writing sucks, they just say stop writing sucky stuff

You went to a community college, didn't you.

It depends on what type of media and audience you are writing for. A lot of news actually has to been written at a lower level.

That post you're referring to may have came from a pretentious pov but in some instances it's actually partially correct.

Right, it has to be simplified for the reader, which isn't that easy if you're covering something complex.

lol yeah this is what I'm worried about. I'm just going to try to intern around wherever I can. I'm focusing right now on national geographic travel, but really wherever I can get something to work toward that is fine

Or you can be lucky and have a great professor with 40+ years experience in writing journalism, like I did, and have your ass kicked.

Just make as many connections as you can, and hold onto them. Take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself.

Hopefully the school you're at has employment advising.
