How do you find names for your characters when you start writing a novel?

Use an existing name or make up a new one that's never been heard before.

I pull them directly out of my ass. One of the better names I came up with was Lieught Scleoupo.

I don't worry about it so much. In time spent thinking of the plot, the character tells me who they are and what their name is.

just use filler names until they develop.

Good idea, but I think I'll use numbers instead.

this applies to Terry Pratchett so hard, especially the "funny" names

use numbers full stop, not as placeholders

it's so lazy that people will assume there MUST be a clever reason for it

Nice to know you're still a retarded cunt

That's retarded though.

Analyze names.
>Male/female names
>Old/New names, different names for different generations
>Describing or role oriented names
>Hopeful names, in times of trouble
>Flowery, color focused names
>Adventurous names (Skywalker)
>Infiltrator names (twisted versions of the local names)
>Nicknames
>Middle names, shortened names, variant names

>> No.9796674

I take a first name that is fairly common and apply it to a last name of someone I know but don't know well and haven't seen in years that sounds nice with the first name. Sometimes a name will just materialize in my head that's just too good to pass up, and other times I literally just use a Random Surname Generator.
Names having meaning is a dead meme

Do you not know what the fuck you're writing for?

I always name my characters a variation of Carl. You have a lot of material this way there's Carl, Carla, Carlos, Carlie, Carlton, Carlson, Carol, Karl...And so on

Substitute with placeholders until you can think of a decent name for them
