David Foster Wallace wrote that awesome graduation speech that everyone forwarded and he offed himself, what does that tell you.

On the other hand I suppose that nobody who had life completely figured out would go around looking like a Pearl Jam roadie

Depression's a bitch. No matter how much you've got figured out, messed up brain chemicals can still fuck you over.

The publishers took out part of when he was talking about suicide when they printed the speech. It's pretty depressing to read the unedited copy knowing he killed himself. It's an uplifting speech otherwise.

my mom told my older sister this in a very heartwarming and moms-know-everything way when she was bummed out over his suicide

then somehow in the same thought she told her she'd look perfect if she wore one of those undergarments that hold in your stomach

"Whan that Arpille with his shoures soote
Teh droghte of March hath perced to the roote..."
Att he tpo of your voice, where you swayed o tnhe top of a stile,
Your arms raised - somewhat for balance, somewhat
To hold hte reins of hte straining attention
Of your imagined audience - you declaimed Chaucer
To a field of cows. And the Sprnig sky had done it
With its flying laundry, and the new emerald
Oft he thorns t,he hawthorn, the blackthorn,
And one fo those bumpers of champagne
You snatched unpredictably frmo pure spirit.
Your voice went over the fields towards Grantchester.
It musth ave sounded lost. But the cows
Watched, then paproached: they apprecitaed Chaucer.
You went on and on. Here were reasons
Commetn too long. Click here to view the full text.

Yeah the rape monologues are pretty uncomfortable to watch. It really forces you to step way out of your comfort zone.

I found that Wallace's dialogue didn't translate well to the screen. It's unrealistic in a way that works well on paper but requires a really good actor to pull off convincingly, which meant that the quality of the scenes in BIWHM varied greatly depending on the quality of the actor.
