I'm unironically considering this desu. I figure anything that I really need to know, God will reveal to me through Bible and prayer. Obviously, I'd read a different book if I was looking up how to bake a cake or something, but as far as the most important stuff goes...
Of course, it feels ridiculous to listen to mediocre sermons when I could be reading some of this earth's finest theology. Never even got into Augustine. It's a tough call. George Mueller did what I'm thinking of doing, apparently.

Don't forget about Aquinas. But yeah, the Bible is definitely the book that you could read forever. Reading through it and going through so many absolutely sublime passages and stories only strengthened my belief in God. You read the Psalms of David and wonder how a human could even write something so utterly beautiful and profound alone. And you never got tired of reading them over and over. I plan on using my memorization and study of the bible in English to help me learn Latin with the Vulgate bible.

>Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran; andHaran begot Lot. And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees. And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Ahram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor ' s wife, Mi icah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah. But Sarai was barren; she had no child. And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram \s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there. And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.

It really fucking is, though. There are some great parts like...when I read through it my favorite books were Genesis, Job, Joshua, Judges, the books of the early church in the NT, and Ezra, but look at Psalms where almost every Psalm is the same basic shit and then on top of that Psalm 119 is a 150 verse rehash of everything that was said in the other 149 Psalms...euch. Or all the parts in Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Numbers, and the latter half of Exodus where it's just describing various rituals in painstaking detail or droning on about how many cubits and how much gold the tabernacle needs to be/have....

There are a LOT of boring passages in the Bible.

I find it best to set aside 20-30 minutes for the bible every day and I stick to that. This is enough time for 2-5 chapters per day. After a while it becomes a habit and it makes getting through the tougher or boring sections easier because there's a lot of books in the bible and you're not going to like all of them, at least on a first reading. Since it's just a short amount of reading each day it also helps me maintain interest and avoid getting burned out.

Reading the bible is a very rewarding experience. Take your time and enjoy it, and look for other books that might help you increase your understanding of scripture. Peter Kreeft has a book called "You Can Understand the Bible" that I would recommend. Trent Horn has useful book called Hard Sayings that deal with the more hard to understand aspects of the bible and I would recommend anything by Scott Hahn. He has a library of books that range from entry level first time reader of scripture to academic historical analysis.

I assure you >>9729822 is not a meme. The first five books are the foundational Hebrew laws and the contexts of them, the historical narratives emphasise the importance of the Hebrew laws plus it describes the place of the Hebrew culture and people within Mesopotamia from their perspective, the poetry books both flesh out things culturally and are just amazing and beautiful a lot of the time, the prophets put all the previous things together as a means of reinterpretation and Christians hold that their prophecies foresaw Christ, the minor prophets aside from Daniel and Jonah are the first things you can blamelessly skip since there's nothing really new, and the apocrypha too except for Maccabees can be safely skipped for the same reason, the Gospels of the new testament are obviously all important, the post Christ narratives and Epistles of Paul are huge in both establishing the church and putting Christ in context, there are some minor Epistles you could take or leave since there aren't many, and then there's Revelation which is obviously important.

tl;dr read it all

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
O my God, I cry in the day time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.
But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts.
I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.
Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
But be not thou far from me, O Lord: O my strength, haste thee to help me.
Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.
Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.
I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
Ye that fear the Lord, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.
For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.
All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
For the kingdom is the Lord's: and he is the governor among the nations.
All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

It must be the work of the devil of course! Silly me. They had me get rid of a book I bought with money I earned. What book was it? Guiness world records gamer edition. Why was it seized? It had Devil May Cry in it. I got a PS1 on my birthday from real mom with Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. They made me give it back after a week. Lots of what there was to do was read a bible. I grew to hate it. I should read about this story of a guy who got swallowed by a fish and survived thousands of years ago while my disabled mom had to go through fucking stupid legal shit and got raped in between? Reading about some naked girl eating a bad wumpa fruit is more important than adressing the constant failings on part of a broken system my family had to pay for?
