I love the epic scope of this book, its Crimean war setting that zooms in on these incredibly tormented yet realistically rendered characters

Pic is the cover of my edition

Don't know if this would be considered "lesser known," but I don't see it discussed here at all.

Got me through a rough patch of my college years, mostly by highlighting the absurdity of it all.

I love the The Basketball Diaries. Jim Carroll's writing is great and at times poetic and dreamy(but used sparingly in a handful of evocative passages)

it is sadly out of print but I have a 1987 Faber & Faber double binding of The Basketball Diaries and The Book of Nods(a collection of prose poetry inspired by the vivid dreams sometimes experienced while nodding out on opiates)

As one would expect, the book is completely different from the novel. In fact, Anna Kendrick's character doesn't even exist in the book. Nor does the scene where Ryan goes to Alex's house and sees her family.

The movie is decent romantic comedy-esque material, but the book is a more serious look into the life of the "road warrior" lifestyle and modern business practices. Ryan is so removed from common society he may as well be innawoods.
